James Joseph McConn, Jr., age 76, of Houston, Texas entered everlasting life on July 14, 2024, in the presence of his family.
Jim was born in Houston on April 25, 1948, to Jim and Margie McConn. He attended St. Anne's and St. Michael's parochial schools and St. Thomas High School. He was proud to attend the University of Notre Dame, as his father had and his eldest son later would. Graduating in 1970, he then obtained his J.D. from the University of Texas Law School. There, he met his beloved wife, Cathy McLean, who was teaching in Austin. They married in 1972 and moved back to Houston to raise a family. He began practicing law and founded Hays, McConn, Rice, and Pickering, where he practiced dutifully for 33 years.
Jim was a devout Catholic and an active member of church organizations like Legatus and the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. The eldest son of a Houston mayor, he was a proud Houstonian who inherited his parents' charisma and generosity of spirit. He loved sports, especially baseball. He was coached by his father on two national champion little league baseball teams, quarterbacked for the 1965 St. Thomas High School state champion football team, and became an avid golfer. In addition to his loyalty to the Fighting Irish, he closely followed the Houston Astros his entire life, making plentiful memories at Minute Maid Park and reveled in their recent World Series wins. He fervently cultivated interests in politics, Catholic theology, literature, and travel.
Jim was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather (aka "Pops"). He led by example, displaying selflessness, magnanimity, and work ethic. He chose joy every day. His children remember him giving memorable toasts, cheering at countless little league games, assigning silly but endearing nicknames, dominating driveway H-O-R-S-E games, outings to Bookstop and Blockbuster, solving jumble and crossword puzzles, delivering excellent 'dad jokes', and mingling at the Lake McQueeney lodge. In his retirement, he began a tradition of monthly one-on-one lunches with his sons and daughters, time which everyone cherished. He had an infectious laugh that is already sorely missed by all who knew him. His legacy endures by all the lives he touched in his 76 rich, full years of life. Jim battled Lewy Body Dementia in his final years, and we pray for the repose of his soul and a restoration to health in his eternal rest and reward.
Jim is survived by his wife of 52 years, Cathy. He is also survived by his siblings Kevin (Georgia), Terry (Kim), Melissa Sacra (Mark), and Andy (Beverly) and his children and their spouses: Chris (Lindsay), Amy Rizo-Patron (Raul), Carolyn Valentin (Art), Jimmy (Laura), Erin Modglin (Jason), Andy (Kirby) and Molly Duncan (William). He loved his 19 grandchildren who brought him much joy: Cecilia, Ana, Sam, Quinn, Evan, Emily, Alexander, Jack, Benjamin, Max, Lucas, Eloise, Charlie, Thomas, Allyn, Riley, Matthew, Phillip, and Eden. His 20th grandchild is due in September.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James J. and Marjorie McConn, and his brother, Michael Glenn McConn.
Friends are cordially invited to gather with the family and share remembrances of Mr. McConn during a visitation to be held from half-past five o'clock in the evening on Friday, July 19th, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Walsingham in Houston, 7809 Shadyvilla Lane, Houston, Texas. Jimmy was such a kind and considerate man. When you would have a conversation with him, he would direct all of his attention to you. We know he was a devout man of God and brought his children up in the Catholic church. But more than that, his actions spoke more than his words. Bruce and Jimmy practiced law for many years together. We had the privilege to knowing Cathy through that association and watching them grow their family throughout the years. We always looked forward to receiving their annual Christmas photo card with the ever growing family. Jimmy will be sorely missed, but never forgotten. Sherry & Bruce Gaible

I was inspired and moved to gratitude reading that obituary for a beautiful life. How I wish I could have known him longer and better. I only got to talk to him a few times, and we talked about, what else, the Astros. May God reward him for living such a life of faith, trust, and love.

Cathy and I went to high school, Loyola University and then Texas together. I first met Jimmy when they started dating. They were so in love and that love has lasted through the years. He was a very special guy.

Jimmy was a year ahead of me at St. Michaels and I will always have fond memories of him, as the quarterback of the " Tiger" football team, pitcher for the baseball team and noteworthy in basketball... and an accomplished attorney. But most of all, I'll remember him as a soft-spoken, really nice guy...Safe Journey Home, Jimmy

Jim and I seemed to end up at the same events and social situations on a very regular basis. I always found myself drawn to him. It was not because we were both lawyers, doing the same sort of work, though we had that in common. It was not because we shared political, social outlooks and views, though we surely did. It was not because there weren't other people to be with, since we were often in crowds. I was regularly drawn to Jim because he was a humble, faithful, sincere man in every way. He was the kind of man I always wanted to be. You always knew where Jim stood on a subject, but I don't recall a single instance of him speaking ill of someone else, or where he was otherwise ugly in any way. I'm afraid he could not say the same about me, yet he endured me time and again. There was no pretense, nothing phony about him, nothing other than a pleasant chat, each and every time. In a world of professionals who knew each other, or at least thought they did, Jim was known by all as a man of uncompromised integrity with formidable talent who was as reliable as the sun rising in the east. Above all, I will forever remember Jim as a man of faith who demonstrated regularly what a husband, father, grandfather and friend are supposed look like. We weren't best friends; I'm sure there are any number of people who would claim that role. But we were friends, the way good friends are supposed to be. While his family and many loved ones will bear the brunt of the loss of his passing, there are many like me who will miss him as well. Yet, we are left with such fond memories. Truly good men are hard to find, and we just lost one of the best. May perpetual light shine upon him.

Having grown up next door to the McConns, we were always impressed with what a loving and close knit family they have been. Though Jimmy was older and, as such, not a regular in our childhood games played out in the street or in our backyards, we watched him come and go from school, sports, and after school jobs. He was a devoted big brother and fine role model for al his siblings as well as a son any parent would be proud of. His dedication to his wife and family is testament to what a fine man he was and we send our deepest condolences to all the McConns during this sad time.
