James Larry McGriff, 74, passed to his eternal home January 25, 2025, at Cullman Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Cleveland, Alabama, to Ovis James and Lavara “Jo” Dial McGriff.
Larry was a 1969 graduate of Holly Pond High School and was named All-County in basketball.
He was drafted into the United States Army and reenlisted to proudly serve his country for eight years.
Upon leaving the military he followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a carpenter, working with his father and brother until their deaths. He then worked for Walker Brothers in Baileyton, until his death.
He was an avid hunter and enjoyed being outdoors.
He was baptized on September 14, 2014, at Cornerstone Revival Center.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Debra McGriff; a brother, Eugene “Blue” McGriff; as well as his paternal and maternal grandparents.
He is survived by his daughter, Suzette Robbins, Athens, Alabama; son, Tyson (Samaria) McGriff; grandson, Camden Robbins; brothers, Kennith McGriff, Ronnie (Brenda) McGriff, Holly Pond, Alabama; Byron (Debbie) McGriff, Eva, Alabama; sister, Charlotte (Mike) Denney, Holly Pond, Alabama; sister-in-law, Judy McGriff, Holly Pond, Alabama; stepdaughters, Jessica Loegler, CeCe Howell; aunts, Elna Barnett, Carol White; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends are invited to join the family for a time of visitation on Tuesday evening, January 28, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the Holly Pond Funeral Home Chapel. Larry will lie in state at the funeral home on Wednesday morning, January 29, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until services begin at 11:00 a.m., Frankie Stewart officiating. Burial will follow in New Hope #2 Cemetery where Will Newcomb, Chris McGriff, Kevin McGriff, Billy McGriff, Duston Denney, and John Leathers will serve as pallbearers with Jacob Gibbs serving as honorary pallbearer. The United States Army will render military honors at the graveside in appreciation of Mr. McGriff’s service and sacrifice to our nation.
