James E. "Jim" McManus, of Weymouth, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2023, at the age of 91.
He was the beloved husband of the late Joan (McDougall) McManus for 62 years. The son of the late Harold and Anna Louise (Kelly) McManus, Jim was born and raised in Boston. The oldest of three children, Jim loved growing up in the neighborhood of Dorchester. Jim served in the National Guard Reserves from 1949 to 1958. He graduated from Bentley College in 1958. Jim and Joan married on June 7, 1958, at St. Kevin's Church in Dorchester. They initially settled in Mattapan where they welcomed their six children. In 1972, they moved their family to a home in North Weymouth, close to the ocean where Jim vacationed as a child. Their lives revolved around raising their children and supporting their many activities. A man of faith, Jim was actively involved in St. Jerome's Parish in both school and parish activities, most notably as a member of the Knights of Columbus. Jim was well known for several years as a caller at St. Jerome's Thursday night bingo. Jim was also a member of the Archdiocese of Boston Labour Guild for 30 years.
Jim worked as a computer programmer for the City of Boston from 1948 to 1992, working his way up to manager of the data processing division. In 1986, Jim was instrumental in starting Sena Local 9158 (a United SteelWorkers local union) which represents public employees in Massachusetts. Jim served as Local 9158's first President.
Post retirement, Sunday became Jim's favorite day. He enjoyed attending mass in the morning, cheering on his beloved New England sports teams from his favorite chair in the afternoon, and eating dinner with his family in the evening. Sharp as a tack until his passing, Jim would also squeeze in a game of Suduko at the end of the day if time allowed.
Jim was a devoted father to Dr. Brendan McManus and his wife Indra Kenyon of Bemidji, Minnesota, Matthew McManus of Quincy, Jody McManus of Weymouth, Sheila McManus and her partner James Shepherd of Quincy, Paula Cannavo of Middleboro and Amy Geary of Weymouth.
Jim was "Ba" to three grandchildren. He was incredibly proud of John Vito, Madeline Cannavo and Seamus Geary.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on January 18, 2023, from 8:30 am to 10 am in the McDonald Keohane Funeral Home, NORTH WEYMOUTH at 40 Sea Street. A mass will follow at 10:30 am at St. Jerome's Church, 632 Bridge Street, North Weymouth. Burial will immediately follow (at approximately 12:15 pm) at St. Joseph's Cemetery in West Roxbury.
