James McNeilly Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Campbell Funeral Home - Ipswich on Feb. 2, 2026.
James (Jim) R. McNeilly, 86, of Manchester, MA and Bokeelia FL (and formerly of Essex, MA), passed away on January 30th after a series of illnesses. He was surrounded by the love and support of his family.

Born in Peabody, MA on September 9, 1939, he was the son of the late James and Mildred (Toomey) McNeilly. He attended St. John's Prep in Danvers, MA and then entered the Xaverian Order. Jim graduated from Catholic University and then taught at Xavier High School in Middletown, CT and at Xaverian Brothers' High School in Westwood, MA. He taught French and coached football at both schools. After leaving the Xaverian Order, he began teaching in Danvers Public Schools and later went on to become a Guidance Director and School Administrator.

Jim married Patricia (Pat) Douglass on July 11, 1970. He is survived by his loving wife, three children--Douglass McNeilly (Gwen) of Wayland, MA; Sarah Donovan (Walter) of Boston, MA; and James (Jake) McNeilly (Amy) of Essex, MA-and six grandchildren: Griffin and Cora McNeilly of Wayland, MA; Elias (Eli) Donovan of Boston, MA; and Olivia, Henry, and Theodore (Teddy) McNeilly of Essex, MA. He was predeceased by his parents and his infant granddaughter, Annabelle Grace McNeilly.

Jim routinely said his and Pat's greatest life accomplishment was their children and grandchildren of whom he was immensely proud. The birth of his newest grandchild, Teddy, with his irresistible smile proved to be what Jim called his, "best medicine." Jim was also a pet lover through and through and treasured each and every one of the family's five dogs and those of his neighbors'.

Serving on the Essex School Committee, the Essex Youth Commission, and on the boards of the Blue Crab Key and Summer Street Condominium Associations kept Jim continuously active in his local communities. He was also a member of the Essex Lions Club and a founding member of the legendary but now defunct Olde Essex Yacht Club.

A Memorial Mass and celebration of Jim's life will be held in early spring. Contributions may be made in Jim's memory to Care Dimensions, 75B Sylvan St. Danvers, MA or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Arrangements by Campbell Funeral Home, 6 High St., Ipswich. Information, directions, condolences at www.campbellfuneral.com.

What can one say when a person you met at 8 AM 9/7/48 (77 years, 4 months and 28 days ago) at St John´s School, Peabody has gone home to God?
Our lives were always mingled by family ties and by a true sense of brotherhood.
Jim was not just a friend he was an older brother to me and to many others. Jim is a beacon of knowledge and kindness. He taught me and I am sure many others, and especially his students, the importance of self-worth and love of others.
During our last time together in the cemetery at the Prep we enjoyed going on our journey through the years. Oh what joy it was! It was also a time when he shared his great love and admiration for his wife, his children, his grandchildren and friends.
The Irish have a saying:

Slán abhaile a dheartháir agus beannacht orainn a d'fhág tú i do dhiaidh!

Safe home my brother and bless us whom you have left behind!
