James Henry McRoy, Jr., age 76, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2024, in Cumberland, Maryland. He was born on March 30, 1948, to the late James Henry McRoy, Sr. and Georgie "Christine" McRoy. He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia Twyman-McRoy, daughter, Tira McRoy, brother-in-law, Melvin Matthews, and sister, Gloria "Jeannie" Matthews.
Jimmy was raised in Montgomery County, Maryland and was educated in the Montgomery County Public Schools. He served in the Vietnam War with the United States Army and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Sharpshooter Badge with Rifle. On August 9, 1968, he was awarded an Honorable Discharge from the United States Army.
Jimmy was known as a knowledgeable person who possessed a deep understanding of a wide range of subjects; someone that could understand and absorb many different perspectives and ideas. He was very informed, analytical, open-minded, and a spirited person with a smile that radiated for miles. Jimmy was a great listener, and a sound giver of advice. He was known for telling you like it is whether you wanted to hear it or not -- a real straight shooter. James was an immaculate dresser and took pride in looking his best at all times.
Building furniture was a passion as he was very skilled with his hands. He worked several years as a carpenter. Jimmy loved dancing to the songs of Lou Rawls and was known as the best hand dancer in Montgomery County. It wasn't a weekend where he wasn't seen hand dancing at the Dew Drop Inn and was a "Die Hard" Washington Redskins fan. He was often known to call the Redskins rival, the Dallas Cowboys "The Cowgirls".
Jimmy was a family man and loved his family dearly. He leaves behind to cherish his memory two children, Chiffon and James Henry McRoy, III; thirteen grandchildren, Terrance, Lamont, Lamar, Keyonna, Kyla, Kaylin, Khloe, Tiara, Timothy, and Tyrone McRoy, Teneisha Richburg (Amahd), Cheyenne Downie, and Kevin King; six great-grandchildren, Zane, Kian, Reign and Amari McRoy, Areyana Ottley, and Tyjaun Simmons; two siblings Daniel and Cassandra McRoy; one uncle James Roberson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Jimmy will truly be missed and will always be loved by his family, extended family, and friends.
