James J. McTernan, Sr., a lifelong resident of Leonardo, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2024, at the age of 80. Born on September 26, 1943, in Leonardo, a son of the late Joseph and Anna McTernan, led a life marked by service, joy, and an unwavering commitment to his family and friends.
James proudly served his country as a member of the US Navy during the Vietnam War, an experience that shaped much of his character and values. After his military service, he continued to contribute to his community as a custodian for the Middletown School District. His dedication to the job and the students he encountered was evident to all who knew him.
A true family man, James is survived by his three loving sons, David and his wife Pam McTernan, Mark McTernan, and Tony Kurtanick. He was a guiding light to his daughters, Kelly Alvarez and Kim Kurtanick his daughter-in-law, PattiJean McTernan widow of James McTernan, Jr. His sisters, Arlene Haake, Jean Stiesi, and Donna Daly, will dearly miss their brother's warmth and humor. James was a proud grandfather to fifteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, who will carry his legacy forward. Along with his son James, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Donna McTernan, who he affectionately called "Oh Donna" after the song, and his brother Richard McTernan.
James's involvement with the American Legion Post 338 in Leonardo was a testament to his enduring camaraderie and patriotism. His fellow veterans and community members will remember him not only for his service but for his spirited personality. As the past grand marshal of the Middletown Veteran's Day Parade, he wore his pride on his sleeve, leading with a smile that could light up the streets.
An avid fan of Frank Sinatra, James could often be found singing karaoke, his voice carrying the same charm and character as the tunes he so loved. His joy was contagious, and his presence at Slater's Deli or the Legion was a welcome sight to friends and acquaintances. James was also known for his love of pull tabs and scratch-off tickets, always hopeful and ever optimistic.
The words friendly, loving, and kind are regularly used to describe James. He was the kind of person who never met a stranger and whose kindness knew no bounds. His laughter was a familiar and comforting sound to those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
James's life was a tapestry of service, family, and friendship. His absence will be felt deeply by those he leaves behind, yet his spirit will continue to inspire and guide them. James J. McTernan, Sr.'s story is one of love, laughter, and a life well-lived. He will be profoundly missed, yet his legacy will endure in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with him.
As we say farewell to James, we celebrate a life that exemplified the very best of what it means to be a part of a community, to serve one's country, and to love one's family with every fiber of one's being. Rest in peace, James J. McTernan, Sr.; your memory will forever be a beacon of light for all of us.

My thoughts are with Jeanne and Arlene on the loss of their beloved brother Jimmie. Jim was my cousin, my Dad was Uncle Bill to all the cousins. Jim always had a smile on his face and was easy to laugh. Rest in peace cousin.
