James D. Mehaffey
May 2, 1936 – May 22, 2025
James D. Mehaffey, born May 2, 1936, in Hinsdale, Illinois, passed away at home in the comfort of his loved ones, who stood by his side in his final moments. Raised in Westmont, Jim was a proud graduate of Downers Grove North High School, where he was a standout athlete in track and field, earning recognition in multiple events. After high school, Jim served his country with honor in the United States Army. He later built a long and dedicated career with the United States Postal Service, from which he retired with pride. On May 25, 1979, Jim married the love of his life, Frances (Shirley) Toscano. Together, they built a life and home in Downers Grove, Illinois, where he embraced his role as a devoted father to her two sons, Frank and Buddy Davis. The family was at the heart of everything Jim did. He is survived by his beloved wife, Frances Mehaffey; his sons Frank and Buddy, his grandchildren, Stephanie (Johnny), Sarah, Kevin, and Courtney; his great-grandchildren Dezirae, Amanda, Iviana, Justin, Gianna, Johnny, Izabella, Amari, Gabriella, Vanessa, Amiyah and great-great-grandchildren CJ and Italey, all of whom brought him immeasurable joy.
Jim was a faithful and active member of St. Mary's Church, where his quiet devotion and dependable presence were deeply appreciated by his church community. He also found great joy in life's simpler pleasures, spending time in his garden nurturing flowers, and getting lost in a good, faithful book. He loved going to his trailer with Shirley, where they loved relaxing, riding golf carts, and he loved going to the pool. His love of learning, the outdoors, and family time reflected the thoughtfulness and calm that defined his character. Jim will be remembered for his quiet strength, steady presence, and the deep love he had for his family. His legacy is one of service, integrity, and unwavering devotion-as a soldier, a public servant, a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a patriarch. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who knew and loved him.
As grandpa would say Seize the Day!
