James "Jim" Mitchell "Mitch", 75, of Naples, Florida, passed away on Monday, January 6, 2025.
Jim was born on October 3, 1949, in
Franklin, Indiana, to William A. Mitchell and Alice V. (Campbell) Mitchell. A 1967 graduate of Franklin Community High School, Jim's life was a testament to hard work, kindness, and a love for family - and don't forget the Indy 500.
He was a proud member of the UA Local 440 Plumbers, SteamFitters, and HVACR Service Technicians, dedicating decades to his craft before retiring in 2011.
In July of that same year, Jim married Ellen Alexander, who survives him and will forever cherish their years of love and companionship. Their love story is one of a kind. He is also survived by his sons, Jake Mitchell and Jared Dougherty; his sister, Norma Dillard; his brother, Gary Mitchell; and his beloved grandchildren, Ava, Gwyn, and Landon Mitchell. Additionally, Jim's blended family brought him great joy: step-children Jason Hauck and Jill Hauck, and step-grandchildren Sam Hauck, Kayla Hauck, Isabella Fowler, Colten Hauck, and Nolan Hauck. Jim was preceded in passing by his parents, William and Alice Mitchell.
Jim simply adored his son Jake. Jake's words reflect the admiration and deep respect he holds for his father: "My dad is seriously the best human being I've ever known, not just because he's my dad, just genuinely the best." These sentiments emphasize Jim's extraordinary ability to see the good in others, to approach life with an open and kind heart, and to uplift those around him without judgment.
Jim's role as Jake's mentor, advocate, and confidant was irreplaceable. Whether teaching Jake life skills, providing wise counsel on parenting his own children, or simply being a patient listener, Jim's presence was a constant source of strength and wisdom. Their cherished tradition of attending the Indy 500 each year speaks volumes about their shared joy and connection. Waking up at 4 a.m., preparing breakfast for the group, and immersing themselves in the excitement of the race became a sacred ritual-a testament to the bond they shared.
Jake's tribute is a touching reminder of the enduring impact of a father's love and the invaluable legacy of shared memories. Jim will undoubtedly be remembered not only as a father but as a friend, mentor, and a man with an unparalleled capacity for love and kindness.
Jim had a passion for life and an endless curiosity for the world. He enjoyed cheering for the Indianapolis Colts, Indiana University Hoosiers, and the Pacers. The roar of engines at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the annual Indy 500 were among his favorite thrills. A gifted woodworker and history enthusiast, Jim spent countless hours crafting beautiful pieces and delving into the stories of the past. Above all, he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, who brought immeasurable happiness to his life.
A Celebration of Jim's life will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home, located at 2898 North Morton Street (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin. Visitation will take place prior to the service, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Jim Cooper will officiate the service.
Jim's legacy of love, kindness, and laughter will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to
