James Robert Morrissey passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 92 on Sunday, December 29, 2024. "Jim" was born to James T. and Mary Olive Morrissey on April 23, 1932 in Worcester, Massachusetts. He proudly served our country in the United States Coast Guard from 1951 – 1954. He was assigned to USCGC Casco (WAVP) and provided weather station patrols to the Northeast coastline including Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. His favorite assignment was the Butler Flats Lighthouse Station in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He met Anne Marie "Nancy" Browne at the Shrewsbury Lakeside Dance Hall and they became lifetime dance partners for over 68 years on August 4, 1956 at St. Peter's Church in Worcester, Massachusetts. Given Jim's love of the ocean, the newlyweds soon searched for a warmer climate. They decided to follow in his older sister "Bea" and brother-in-law Norman's footsteps and moved to Miami Beach, Florida. Jim joined Delta Air Lines in May 1958 and was transferred to Atlanta, Georgia in 1964 where he enjoyed a 34-year career. Delta Air Lines allowed Jim and Nancy to share their love of travel across the US and internationally enjoying destinations throughout Europe such as Ireland, Greece, Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, France, Italy and as far as Tahiti and China. "Have Plane – Will Travel" was Jim and Nancy's motto and allowed them to stay in touch with family and attend many special family events through the years including the annual July 4th favorite Hampton Beach, NH family reunion. In the 1970s, Jim became an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Airline Personnel (FCAP) where he and Nancy served and supported faithfully this ministry to spread the gospel to the airline community around the world. For more than 25 years, Jim participated in the annual FCAP snow skiing and worship experience in the Austrian Alps. He shared this special adventure many times with his daughters, their families, extended family members and friends. When Jim was home from travelling the world, he could be found tending to his tropical plant paradise in his backyard. He shared this passion and his talented "green thumb" gift with family, friends and throughout his community. Jim was a devoted and active member of St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church for close to 60 years. He became part of the Cursillo Movement where he recommitted his faith almost 50 years ago and continued to serve in that ministry throughout the years. He served as a Eucharistic Minister and visited shut-ins for several years. Jim was a proud Godparent to many within the parish as well as extended family.
Jim is survived by his wife of 68 years, Nancy Morrissey, his two daughters; Kim (Don)McMillian of Lake Spivey, GA, Cindy (Kevin) Cox of Brunswick, GA, his four grandchildren, Drew Cox, Clay (Kati) McMillian, Sarah McMillian and Allyson Cox.
