James Williamson Newman passed away peacefully at home on March 25, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, devotion, and cherished memories. Born on May 17, 1943, Jimmy’s life was marked by a deep connection to family, community, and the outdoors, touches that will forever warm the hearts of those who knew him.
From an early age, Jimmy worked alongside his father at Newman's Men's Shop, absorbing the values of hard work and dedication that shaped his character. His entrepreneurial spirit soon led him to establish the Newman Agency, where he sold sporting goods, blending his passion for business with his love of sports and the outdoors. This chapter of his life reflected a man who not only pursued success but did so in a way that engaged those around him with enthusiasm and kindness.
Jimmy was a loving husband and father and he enjoyed cooking out and having fish fries from the catch of the day. These special memories were captured at the “pond” with his family and friends.
A true outdoorsman, Jimmy’s heart found its rhythm by the water. Whether fiercely competing in fishing contests on the pond with his children or sharing quiet moments casting lines at the river with friends, he embraced the simple pleasures of life with contagious enthusiasm. He was always on the lookout for the next sunset, embodying a spirit that appreciated nature's transient beauty, and he carried a special love for the beach—a place where many memories were made.
Jimmy’s love extended to his family, including his wife, JoAnn Witherington Newman, and to his beloved children: Letha Newman Lisenby and her husband Donnie, Lanita Newman Evans and her husband Corey, and Chris Giglio. He will be remembered by his grandchildren—Phillip Nathan Lisenby (Christin), Patrick Neil Lisenby (Reneé), Nakota Parkman Dicks (Bryan), Dalton Cole Parkman (Kitty), Tristan Michael Finley, Lakyn Olivia Evans, Haleigh Giglio, and Adrienne Giglio—and great-grandchildren who continue to carry his spirit: Taylor Lisenby Laws, Nathan Porter Lisenby, Grayson Scott Lisenby, Bryleigh Anne Dicks, James Ramsey Dicks, Samuel Whitt Dicks, and Stella Marie Boling. He was preceded in death by his parents, James R. and Doris Helen Newman, whose legacy of family and hard work he honored throughout his life.
The family will have a private memorial gathering at a later date, and memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. The family would like to extend a word of gratitude to his caregivers, Susie and Tynetta for their love and concern the past few months.
May his family find comfort in the peaceful sunsets he cherished, knowing his spirit lives on in every shared smile, every cast line, and every gathering under the open sky. The staff of Green Hills Funeral Home is honored to serve the Newman family.
