Obituary of James Douglas Nieman
Jim Nieman was born July 8, 1947 in New York City. He passed away on November 7, 2024, at Regions Hospital.
Preceded in death by his parents Robert & Florence Nieman and sisters Roberta Husnik & Nancy Niven. Jim is survived by his wife Dottie, children Brian Nieman, Rachel Clevenger (Jon), & Anna Millard, grandchildren Jack, Addie, and Charlie, sister Virginia Pederson, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Jim graduated from Harding HS in 1965. He also attended St Croix Lutheran but his proclivity for smoking & gambling was not appreciated. He swore he wanted to go to Harding to run cross country & wrestle. He was a Viet Nam era veteran & served 16 years in the Army Reserves. He graduated from USF, attended grad school at UMN & attended law school for 3 years. Jim worked for the State of MN for nearly 3 decades.
Jim's greatest achievement was his family. He loved his wife and children and any time with his grandchildren was cherished.
Surviving Stage 4 throat cancer over 17 years ago proved his strength & determination through a laryngectomy & 35 radiation treatments. He was the president of his local lost chord club & truly enjoyed visiting others in the hospital to assure them that they would be different, but they would be ok. Jim was a survivor of a myriad of health challenges & although this final battle was unbeatable his spirit remains with each one of us.
Deepest thanks to Regions Hospital staff for their compassionate & unwavering support, particularly Dr. Felix Zamora. We ask that any memorials be directed to Regions Hospital Foundation.
A private family service will take place this summer.
