Obituary for James Edward Phegley

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Edward Phegley, who departed this life on February 9, 2026, at the age of 88. Born in Bremerton, Washington, on October 27, 1937, to James Melvin Slade and Sarah Lucille Hughes, Sarah remarried and he was raised by his stepfather Earnie Phegley. James's early years were marked by the travels and experiences that came with a military family stationed across the United States. The family later settled in Port Townsend, where James would grow to embrace a life dedicated to learning, teaching, and family.

James graduated from Port Townsend High School in 1955 before continuing his education at Western Washington University, where he earned a teaching degree. He briefly served in the Marine Corps, an experience he carried with him as he embarked on a career in education Teaching at Louisa Boren Junior High School in Seattle, Washington.

In 1965, he married his beloved wife, Millicent Nancy Phegley (Mitzie), with whom he would share a deep and abiding love for 60 wonderful years. Together, they welcomed two children, Michael James Phegley and Constance Marie Phegley (Kenny Pugh), cultivating a family that brought joy to James's life. He is also survived by his sister, Donna Joyce Freitas, and five cherished grandchildren: Rose Marie, Chris, Félix, Sara, and Jude. James was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Harald and Gerald Phegley.

James's professional journey included a notable tenure at the Olympia Brewing Company from 1967 to 1981. His entrepreneurial spirit later led him to build and operate The Office Tavern in Olympia, where he remained active until his passing, often rolling quarters till the very end.

An ardent sports enthusiast and member of the Olympia Golf and Country Club, James was also a devoted Husky season ticket holder. He enjoyed reading, engaging in crossword puzzles, listening to country music, and kept alive the joy of family through his annually witty Christmas letters.

A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date, during which his loved ones will gather to honor his profound legacy of kindness, laughter, and devotion to family.

James Edward Phegley will be deeply missed, yet his spirit will continue to inspire all those who were fortunate enough to know him.
