James C. Phelps, Jr. passed away at 1:50 pm Tuesday, July 8, 2025 in his home. Born on January 2, 1942 in Paducah, KY to the late James C. Phelps Sr. and Mildred (Pryor) Bennett, he was fiercely independent and a pillar of strength throughout his 83 years.
James was a proud veteran of the US Army, Airborne. He often regaled his loved ones with tales of his days leaping from "perfectly good airplanes," a testament to his adventurous spirit and zest for life. After serving his country, he embarked on a long and successful career as the General Manager at High Speed Autowash, where he remained dedicated for 42 years, earning the respect and admiration of colleagues, customers and the community.
Jim's passion for life was evident in his many hobbies and interests. He liked to sing, loved to fish, loved his Honda Goldwing motorcycle. He was also a member of the NAP Town Riders. Jim's competitive nature shone through in his 28 years of playing and officiating softball in the area.
James was a cherished brother to Minnie Eiland, Ida Hennington, Gladys Lester, Raemozelle Phelps and John (Betty) Phelps. Jim was preceded in death by his sister, Minnie, his brother, John, and his parents.
Jim leaves behind his 2 beloved daughters, Dawn and Tanisha Phelps and 2 upstanding sons, William (Leslie) and James III (Dora) Phelps all born during his 23 year marriage to Theresa. He also leaves behind stepson David Rose and stepdaughter Amber Mathes from his 2nd marriage to Crystal. Filling out his current lineage are 9 grandchildren, Alysia Malone, Jada Clark, Daquon Owens, Tasia, Kaylin, Iyana, Kamea, Jariah, and Jamora Phelps, along with 8 great-grandchildren, myriad nieces and nephews.
James will be celebrated and remembered by all who knew him. His steadfastness, strong work ethic, and the stories of his life will continue to inspire his family and friends. Those who wish to honor and share in the memory of James C. Phelps, Jr. are invited to gather from 10 am until 12 noon on Monday, July 14, 2025, in Palmer Funeral Home - West Chapel, South Bend.
As we bid farewell to a man who lived life to the fullest, we take comfort in the knowledge that his spirit will continue to soar high, just as he did in his youth, jumping from airplanes and riding the open road. James C. Phelps, Jr. will be deeply missed, but the impact of his life will be felt for generations to come.
