James Jefferey Phillips, born on January 9, 1946, in Buncombe County, passed away on February 2, 2025, at the Hospice Solace Center in Asheville NC. He lived a life rich with service, creativity, and cherished relationships.

After devoting 35 years to Memorial Mission Hospital, James retired from the medical community and  left a lasting impact, embodying his deep sense of duty and compassion.

Beyond his professional pursuits, James was a talented musician, showcasing his skills with the guitar and dobro. He captivated audiences as a member of the band The Satyrs during the early 1960s and enjoyed further musical endeavors with a bluegrass group named Southern Born. His passion for music was matched by his creativity as a published author, highlighting his ability to weave narratives that resonated with many.

A proud veteran of the United States Coast Guard, James contributed to his country with honor and dedication, which was a testament to his character and service. He also had a keen interest in history, particularly the Civil War, participating in reenactments that brought history to life and shared his enthusiasm with others.

James leaves behind his loving wife, Cynthia Wrenn Phillips; son, Brent Phillips, and his fiancée, Tricia Rae Atanasio; brother, Larry Phillips, and his wife, Flo; as well as his grandchildren, Owen, Hoke, and Maggie Phillips; nephew, Steve Phillips and wife Michelle and Mitch Phillips; great nephew Bobby Phillips and great niece Mackenzie Phillips. He is preceded in death by his parents, James Lowell Phillips and Myrtle Wray Phillips.

James Jefferey Phillips will be remembered for his warmth, creativity, and unwavering love for his family and friends. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, as they hold dear the memories of a life well-lived.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Beam Funeral Service. The family will receive friends following the service.
