James Oliver Puckett Jr. (Jim) passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of service, leadership, and love for his family, friends, and community. Jim was born in Reform, AL to James O. Puckett, Sr. and Nellie Kirk Puckett. After graduating from Reform High School, he went on to earn a degree from Marion Military Institute. He then served in the Army in the Signal Corp before receiving his Education Degree from the University of Alabama, where he met the love of his life, Helen. He continued his education by receiving a Master's and AA in Education from Athens State College.
Jim dedicated his life to education in
Huntsville, Alabama. He began his career teaching and coaching at Joe Bradley Middle School before moving on to Mountain Gap Middle School and Ed White Middle School. His passion for education and leadership led him into administration, where he served as principal at University Place Elementary, Blossomwood Elementary, Huntsville Middle School, and finally Whitesburg Middle School. He touched the lives of countless students, athletes, teachers, and families, forming lifelong friendships and mentoring many along the way. Though he coached multiple sports, football became his focus and passion.
Beyond his professional life, Jim was a devoted member of Willowbrook Baptist Church for over 55 years where he faithfully served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. He taught several Sunday School classes including The Lighthouse Class for many years. He also led numerous bible studies and classes at Brookdale over the years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Oliver and Nellie Puckett; his sister, Noreen Bailey; and his in-laws, Chig and Irene Lusk.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Helen L. Puckett; two children, Jay Puckett (wife Michele) and Elena McCrory (husband Mark); and three grandchildren: Jake Lee (wife Caitlyn, and great-grandson Luke), Josh Lee (wife Lauren, and great-grandson Oliver), Laura Lee, and his sister, Mary Nell Miller.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Willowbrook Church with the funeral service to follow at 12:00 p.m. Interment will then be at Huntsville Memory Gardens.
