James Eugene Rice of Powdersville, SC, passed away from a heart attack on February 1, 2025.
Jim was born on June 19, 1945, in Danville, Virginia, to John and Jessie Rice. He was a joy and surprise to his parents and older brother, Jack.
Jim completed a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Virginia Tech. He went on to a long career in industrial engineering, which included positions at Proctor and Gamble and Digital Equipment Corporation. After retiring, he enjoyed working as a security supervisor at Nutra (now IVC) in Greenville for many more years. He loved his team of security guards and greeting all the visitors during the day.
A devoted father, grandfather, and man of faith, Jim is survived by his daughter, Virginia Cook, with her husband, Billy, of Anderson, SC and his sons, Matthew Rice of Mount Pleasant, SC, and Andrew Rice, with his wife, Marika, of Ashburn, VA. Papa Jim was a loving grandfather to Nataliya, Anya, and Oleksandr Rice—three beautiful grandchildren who brought him immense joy and pride.
Jim’s interests were many. He enjoyed cooking and baking, especially during the holidays, watching football (Go Tigers!), guns, photography, and his cat, Cleo. Maybe most of all, his interest in gadgets spoke to his love of engineering. He was also great at trivia games. Just ask his friends at The Legacy, who he defeated in their local Jeopardy rounds!
Travel was a big part of Jim's life, as his wife, Kathy, loved to plan a trip. He would tirelessly drive his family anywhere she felt they needed to see. Yearly visits to Uncle Jack’s house near Washington, DC, laid-back weeks at the Council’s River house in Beaufort, and camping with their Sunday school class were all good memories.
Jim was an active and dedicated member of his church, where he found strength in his faith and community. All who knew him will deeply miss his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering belief in service to others.
He will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Kathy, a testament to their enduring love and devotion.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 6th from 12:30 PM - 1:45 PM at Siloam Baptist Church in Easley, SC. A Memorial Service will follow in the Church at 2PM to celebrate Jim’s life and legacy.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Siloam Baptist Church Legacy Fund in James Rice’s honor.
Jim’s love, faith, and devotion to his family and community will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched. His quiet demeanor and steadfastness will be missed beyond measure.
