James Rogers, known as Jimmy to his siblings, Jim to his wife and friends, Dad to his children, and PaPa to his beloved grandchildren, exchanged the temporary restraint of this world in favor of eternity with His Lord and Savior on Monday, June 20, 2022. Jim was born September 21, 1941 in Clovis, New Mexico to Charlie and Florine Rogers. While riding his tractor on the family farm, he made the most important decision of life, choosing to become a follower of Jesus Christ. Jim enjoyed the outdoors of New Mexico and Southwestern Colorado, and found a special passion for agriculture and soils. While pursuing his Masters in Soil Science at Texas Tech University, he discovered a greater love and soon married his wife of over 55 years, Sandy Rogers. Together they struck out to find a life together, moving to Fort Collins, Colorado where Jim started and ran a successful soil analysis business. During their time in Fort Collins, Jim and Sandy were blessed with 3 children, Keith, Neil and Paula. As a family, they pursued Jesus, put countless miles on RV's, planted thousands of flowers, grew amazing gardens, searched for smallmouth bass and pheasants and helped ensure each child had the tools they need for a successful life. Jim was a creative and gifted artist and could transform blocks of wood into realistic and beautiful birds, which will be admired by his family for generations.
After the birth of their first grandchild, Jim and Sandy left the beauty of Colorado for Lubbock, Texas and new adventures. Jobs eventually led them back to Denver where they cherished the beauty of the mountains while turning their backyard into a showpiece. A second grandchild was too great to resist and they returned to Lubbock, where Jim enjoyed working for the Texas Tech University School of Agriculture. Together, he and Sandy were faithful members of Indiana Avenue Baptist Church and cherished many friendships in their Sunday School Department.
In later life, Jim struggled with various health issues, including Alzheimer's Disease; yet, illness could not steal his joyful heart, loving spirit or sweet tooth. He always showed up with a smile on his face and box of cookies or scones in his hand. Jim provided an incredible example of how to love his family well. He appreciated time together and ensured his grandchildren excelled in life skills such as casting a fishing line, planting flowers, caring for the yard, and even slurping jello.
Jim is survived by his sister Janet Kittell, brother Chuck Rogers, Sister Helen Pilcher and her husband Duane, sister Cathy Shields, along with numerous nieces and nephews. The love of his life is his wife, Sandy Rogers, along with children Keith and Kelly Rogers, Neil and Celeste Rogers and Paula Cook, and cherished grandchildren Charity, Nathan, Colin, Will, David, Allan and Cami. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Florine Rogers and sisters Joann Forrest and Ellen Rogers.
The family would like to thank Jim's caregivers, extended family, church members, special friends, as well as the staff of Covenant Hospital, Lubbock LTC Nursing and Rehabilitation, and Interim Hospice, for their support as he successfully concluded his life.
Services for Jim Rogers are scheduled at Indiana Avenue Baptist Church on June 25th, at 11:30am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Indiana Avenue Baptist Church University Ministry.
