James Rose Obituary

James Ralph Rose, affectionately known as “Jimmy” by family and friends, passed away in New Albany, Indiana, where he had lived since 1977 with his beloved wife of 51 years, Myrta Jane (Burger) Rose.

Born on April 13, 1943, in Murray, Kentucky, Jimmy was the second of four siblings. He graduated from Murray High School in 1961, where he was a standout athlete. A remarkable football player, he was one of only two in the school’s 101-year football history to be nominated as an All-American — a distinction that brought great pride to his family and hometown. In addition, Jimmy’s love for the outdoors began in western Kentucky, where he became an accomplished hunter and fisherman.

At the age of 22, he enlisted in the Army Reserves where he served honorably for 6 years during the Vietnam War.

After relocating to New Albany, Indiana, he built a rich and full life with Myrta and their 2 children: Vince Rose (Dana), and Dr. Sarah Rose (Dr. William Sears) and his three grandchildren Hunter, James, and Theodore. He was predeceased by his eldest son Wesley Allen Snuggs (d. 2005) and by his parents Allen and Doris Rose. He is survived by his siblings Dr. Jerry Rose (Jan-deceased), Dr. John Rose (Tina), and Jane Rose-Zupetz (Charlie) and a host of beloved nieces and nephews. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, cherishing every moment spent with his family.

He retired from the University of Louisville in 2012 after 34 years of dedicated service. A passionate supporter of UofL athletics, Jimmy rarely missed a football, basketball, or baseball game, faithfully cheering on the Cardinals for over four decades. He also loved horse racing, gardening, reading, and watching old films, especially Westerns.

Jimmy was known for his sharp wit, impeccable timing, and magnetic personality. Whether in Murray or Louisville, his tales, jokes, and playful antics became the stuff of legend. Behind his humor was a man of deep loyalty, kindness, and gentle strength — qualities that endeared him to all who knew him.

He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unforgettable memories and will be dearly missed.

A gathering of family and friends will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 24, 2025 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (3309 Ballard Lane, New Albany) with a funeral service celebrating his life commencing at 2:00 p.m. He will be laid to rest privately at Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Hosparus Health and the US Department of Veterans Affairs for their compassionate care and support during Jimmy’s final journey. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hosparus Health in Jimmy’s memory.
