Jim was born on May 31, 1935, in Petersburg, Iowa, the son of Aloysius and Clara (Kruse) Scherbring. He left school for a couple of years to help his family on the farm. He returned to school and was a 1955 graduate of Colesburg High School. On May 5, 1956, Jim was united in marriage to Janice Barnhart in Colesburg, Iowa. To this union, they were blessed with four children. Jim worked for John Deere in Dubuque, until his retirement in 1991.
During his earlier years, Jim enjoyed playing baseball and softball. He coached Little League for many years. He especially enjoyed golfing and assisted in the development of Lone Pine Country Club. Jim attended the Colesburg United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Colesburg Fire Department. Jim also enjoyed watching old westerns, attending his children and grandchildren's events, traveling to Branson, Missouri, gardening and woodworking. He hand-crafted many special pieces for his family and friends over the years. He especially enjoyed riding around on his John Deere lawn tractor.
Jim was a loyal and devoted fan of the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes basketball and football, as well as the Kansas City Chiefs. His greatest joy was time spent with his family. Jim and Janice were honored to be the Grand Marshals of the Colesburg Fourth of July parade in 2013. To many of his friends, Jim was also known as "Carp". He, along with his witty sense of humor, contagious laugh, and stubbornness will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Jim is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 67 years, Janice Scherbring; children, Julie (Steve) Wessel, Terrie (Randy) Elledge, Lori (Tim) Elledge and Chad Scherbring; eight grandchildren, Shanna Sperfslage, Shane (Abby) Wessel, Lindsey (Adam) Sherman, Courtney (Rob) Reinsmoen, Dylan (Gina) Elledge, Kelsey (Cory) Schuster, Dustin Elledge and Ashley (CK) Crowder; thirteen great-grandchildren, Taylor and Tessa Sperfslage, Ethan, Alli and Avery Reinsmoen, Wyhett Fogel, Waylon and Wiley Elledge, Harlan and Harlow Wessel, and Trey, Marlee and Maggie Crowder; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in eternal life by his parents, Aloysius and Clara Scherbring; siblings, Urban Scherbring, Paul (Verna) Scherbring, Fritz (Florence) Scherbring, Myra (Joe) Rausch and Mae Eunice Scherbring, Father-in-law and Mother-in-law, Harry and Alvina Barnhart; five sisters-in-law, Kathleen (Denny) Royalty, Marge (Julius) Moser, Jeanne Amsden, Ruth (Dan) Harbaugh, and Donna (Delos) Sadewasser; one brother-in-law, Lowell (Edith) Barnhart; and a host of many life-long friends that will be waiting for him to continue their life-long shenanigans.
In Jim's honor, "Love your family, support your community and live your life to the fullest".
The family would like to give a special thank you, and extend our appreciation for all the care given to Jim and his family, especially to Jill Buschmann, Pete Buschmann, Cory Schenke, Above and Beyond "Therapy Girls" and the Hospice Team. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
