James Warren Schubert

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of James Warren Schubert, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who departed from this world on March 31, 2024, at the age of 85. His departure leaves a profound void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. James was born May 19, 1938 in Sequin, Texas, the son of Edgar Paul Schubert and Alice Roberts Schubert. From a young age, he exhibited a zest for flying. Joining the Air Force made his wish to become a pilot come true. He embarked on a journey of a life marked by dedication, integrity, and love for his family and the LoneStar State. In his eight-year military career, James excelled as a pilot, a skill that proved invaluable throughout his professional journey. He skillfully rescued numerous planes and lives, ranging from large 747s to single-engine aircraft, thanks to his swift reactions and the comprehensive training he received during his military service. Whether it was addressing a blown engine, fuel depletion, or navigating wartime environments, James's military background equipped him with the necessary expertise. He held his military training in high regard, actively imparting his knowledge to other pilots through professional avenues like simulator school and hands-on training, ensuring the safety of both people and aircraft. Additionally, during the Gulf War, James demonstrated his dedication by ensuring that USA troops reached their destination in Riyaad, Saudi Arabia. When a country refused to accept payment for refueling, he took matters into his own hands, rallying airline staff and troops to contribute cash, ensuring that the necessary refueling occurred and the troops reached their destinations without delay. In his professional life, James excelled as a pilot. He accumulated 22,000 hours of flying time. His commitment to excellence and his innate leadership qualities earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and clients alike. Whether building a new airline from the ground up in Hawaii (Director of Operations, Chief Pilot, making the coffee, and taking out the trash), flying the skies, or training the next generation of corporate pilots, James approached every endeavor with passion and determination, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of working with him. Outside of work, James was a devoted project enthusiast. Whether it was building his own house or an addition to the home, constructing sheds and decks, repainting their personal airplane with Marilyn, building a barn for horses that he and Jamie rode, restoring old vehicles with Andy and Carter, educating Evan and Carter how to oil paint, getting old tractors to run again, buying an old bus and converting it into an RV that James and Marilyn often used and in later years transforming it into his personal retreat, he was always engaged in hands-on endeavors. James was proud of his first grandson, Collin, for his academic excellence at university. When Collin was around 12 years old, he visited for an active week of educational trips to the United States Mint and flying the Gulfstream simulator. James's dedication extended beyond his projects to his family. At their initial meeting, James's pickup line to Marilyn was, "I didn't catch your name," to which Marilyn cleverly replied, "I didn't throw it." From the moment they met, about 66 years ago, they knew they were each other's true love. Despite having to wait for him to complete Air Force pilot training, no other men ever measured up to James.He leaves behind his beloved wife Nina "Marilyn" Schubert, their children John Andrew "Andy" Schubert(Irene) and Jamie Lynn Eddy (Brett), and his grandchildren, Collin Eddy, Evan Schubert, and Carter Schubert.Passing his love of Texas and its history on to his family and grandchildren was his joy. Though he may be gone from our sight, James will forever remain in our hearts, where his memory will continue to bring comfort and solace in the days ahead. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your favorite charity, in James's honor. A celebration of James's life will be held on April 13, 10 AM (visitation at 9 AM) at Lucas Funeral Home Grapevine, 700 W Wall St, Grapevine, TX 76051. All who knew and loved him are invited to attend and pay their respects to a remarkable man whose presence enriched the lives of all who crossed his path. Rest in peace, James.
