James David "Bub" Shaffer, 69, of Rush, Kentucky, went to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday, January 1, 2026. Bub was born August 26, 1956, in
Ashland, Kentucky, a son of the late James Edward and Parthea Kathryn Riffe Shaffer. In addition to his parents, Bub was preceded in death by three sisters, Rebecca Ann Shaffer Watts, Roberta Jo "Robbie" Shaffer Chaffin, and Bettye Jayne Shaffer Salmon; three brothers-in-law, Ron Salmon, Danny Hall and Dale Watts; and a nephew, Adam Hall.
Bub had a very contagious personality and people seemed to gravitate toward him. He possessed a strong work ethic, starting as a young boy helping his dad with insulation and electrical work, and gaining early training in operating heavy equipment. Bub worked for Kentucky Electric Steel for a short time before moving on to Grayson Utilities in 1985, where he retired as general manager in 2011; and he never stopped working. At his home, he was always bringing in something to repair or something for a friend. Even when ill from his heart condition, his doctor told him to stop, but Bub's love of tinkering and helping others was in his blood.
Bub is survived by a daughter, Emily (Cameron) Clark of Chesapeake, Ohio; his sons, Andrew (Jeanna) Shaffer of Ashland and Jacob Shaffer of Grayson; a stepson, Jared Fryer of Grayson; three grandchildren, Levi Clark, Lilly Clark, and Chase Fryer; three sisters, Donna (Mike) Hutchinson of Grayson, Vivian (Kenneth) Evans, and Jeanie (Dan) Frederick, both of Rush; and a host of friends and extended family who mourn his passing.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, January 5, 2026, at the Malone Funeral Home with Bro. Dan Frederick officiating. Burial will follow in the East Carter County Memory Gardens. Visitation will be 5–8 p.m. Sunday, January 4, 2026, and after 9 a.m. Monday until the service hour. Condolences may be sent to the Shaffer family at www.malonefuneralhome.com.
