James Melvin Shelton, known affectionately as Jim to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2025, in Tecumseh, Kansas, after courageously battling a long-term illness. Born on January 20, 1962, in Pittsburg, Kansas, Jim's life was a testament to his kind nature, friendly demeanor, and creative spirit. He leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and joyful memories that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Jim's early life in Pittsburg laid a solid foundation for a man who would become known for his unwavering reliability and warmth. His academic journey led him to Kansas University, where he not only expanded his knowledge but also formed lifelong friendships. Jim's passion for learning was matched only by his commitment to serve, as evidenced by his time in the United States Navy Reserves, an experience that instilled in him a profound sense of duty and honor.
Professionally, Jim dedicated himself to the betterment of his community through his work. For nearly two decades, he was an invaluable member of the Kansas Department of Transportation's pavement management group, where his expertise and work ethic were recognized and respected by his colleagues. Prior to this, Jim contributed his talents to Kansas University's facilities management, helping to maintain the campus that had played such a significant role in his life.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Jim was a man of many interests. His love for woodworking was not just a hobby but a form of expression, creating pieces that were as functional as they were beautiful. An avid book reader, he found solace and adventure within the pages of countless novels, often sharing his latest reads with friends and sparking lively discussions. Jim's sharp mind also found pleasure in the challenge of puzzles, a pastime that reflected his patient and methodical approach to problem-solving.
One of Jim's most endearing qualities was his role as a collector. His passion for Coca-Cola memorabilia brought a unique flair to his home, with each item telling a story of a particular time or place. This collection, much like Jim himself, was full of character and history.
Jim's life was enriched by his beloved family. His wife, Connie Shelton, stood by his side as a partner in all of life's adventures. His son, Joe Shelton, inherited his father's kindness and creative mind. Jim also found joy in his blended family, embracing his stepdaughter, Rachel Robinson, as his own, and forming a special bond with his son-in-law, Jimmy Robinson. His grandson, Jacob Robinson, will carry forward the lessons and love that Jim imparted. Jim's siblings, three sisters and one brother, will remember him as the cornerstone of a family built on mutual respect and affection.
Those who had the privilege of knowing Jim understood that he was the embodiment of kindness, friendliness, and creativity. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of many, but his influence will continue to be felt through the memories he created and the lives he touched.
James Melvin Shelton lived a life marked by compassion, service, and an unwavering dedication to those he loved. As we say goodbye, we take comfort in knowing that his story-a story of a life well-lived-will be told for generations to come. Jim's journey on earth has ended, but his spirit remains a guiding light for all who were blessed to know him.
There will be a celebration of life gathering held at Lake Shawnee Garden House (East of the Ted Ensley Gardens and next to the Yacht club). The gathering will start at noon on Friday, November 21st, 2025.
