JAMES THEODORE SHORT
January 28, 1934 – March 6, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of James Theodore Short, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather at the age of 91. A soft-mannered Christian man, who dedicated over 50 years of his life to serving his community and church with unwavering faith and commitment.
James, known by many as Sonny, was born with a spirit of compassion and a heart full of love, he was well thought of in the community and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His spiritual journey included serving as a Deacon and Elder for approximately 50 years in the Church of Christ. His professional journey saw him working at Safeway for 35 years, retiring in 1995 as a Plant Engineer. In 1985, he was awarded Safeway's Exceptional Achievement Award for outstanding service.
His passion for community service included serving as the Mayor of Pottsboro, a member of the City Council, President of the Pottsboro Independent School Board, and President of the Greater Texoma Utility Authority. As Mayor, he worked to expand Highway 120, from Pottsboro to Denison, organized the first Pottsboro Chamber of Commerce, and started the first Pottsboro Police Department. His leadership and vision were instrumental in shaping the community and was a pillar of strength and guidance for many. His commitment to public service was a testament to his deep love for his community and his desire to make a positive impact.
He was a devoted family man, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and humility. He was a guiding light to his family, teaching them the values of faith, compassion, and service. His gentle demeanor, wisdom, and unwavering support will be deeply missed by all who knew him. As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate his remarkable life and the countless lives he touched. His memory will forever live on in our hearts, and his legacy of service and love will continue to inspire future generations.
He was born on January 28, 1934, to Ethel Mae Wisdom Short and Clarence L. Short, the third child in a family of eight. He grew up in the Willow Springs community where he attended classes through the eighth grade graduating from Denison High School in 1951. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958. In 1961, he married Clydene Gillum of Collinsville. They have three children, Robin Towery (husband David), Melanie Qualls (husband Kenneth), and Randy Short (wife Teresa). Grandchildren Jessica Qualls, Kristina Schmidt, Christopher Towery, Blake Towery, Lexi Puri and Ryan Short. Great Grandchildren: Anna Towery, Jackson Towery, Emily Towery, Phillip Towery, Izabel Schmidt, Amara Towery, and Austin Towery.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Leon, Gene and Clyde, Sisters Lillian Burkham, and Wanda Letson. He is survived by his wife, Clydene, of 63 years, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, two sisters, Donna Towery and Linda Cook.
A graveside service will be held in his honor on Saturday, March 15th at 11:00 AM at Georgetown Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Pottsboro Church of Christ, 522 FM 120, Pottsboro, Texas 75076. May he rest in eternal peace, knowing his life was lived with purpose, love, and grace.
