James Alvin Slice, Jr, age 91, formerly of Oak Ridge, died peacefully, surrounded by family, November 2, 2023, at River Grove Health & Rehabilitation in
Loudon, TN.
He was born April 28, 1932, in Clinton, South Carolina to James Alvin Slice, Sr. and Tee Lynn Slice. He attended elementary school in
Greenville, SC before his family relocated to Oak Ridge in 1944. There they became charter members of Grace Lutheran Church. After graduation from Oak Ridge High School in 1950, he served with the US Army 194th Combat Engineering Battalion in Korea, during 1951-52. Upon his return, he married Nancy Katherine Jones, with whom he had three children. During his long career as an electrician and member of IBEW Local #760, he worked at K-25,
Portsmouth, Ohio, Y-12, and retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
As a lifelong learner, he was knowledgeable about many subjects, including history and family genealogy, and was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He spoke German fluently and enjoyed several trips to Europe, as well as extensive domestic travel. He shared his knowledge of and love of the outdoors in many hiking and camping trips with his family and as assistant scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop #224. In retirement, he derived much pleasure from growing fruits and vegetables to sell at the farmers market in Oak Ridge. He served his church in various capacities, especially enjoying serving with the church food pantry. He loved music, reading, and drawing, and never knew a stranger, always inquiring about where a person was born and raised. His Christian faith continued to grow deeper during his later years, and he enjoyed hymns and reading the Bible.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his second wife, Ruby Lee Slice; and brother, William Lynn Slice. He is survived by the mother of his children, Nancy Slice Hardin; son, James Alvin Slice, III (Suzy) of McDonough, GA; two daughters, Joy Wells (David) of
Greenville, SC, and Janie Bryant (Gary) of Greenback; thirteen grandchildren: Malachi Jonathan Slice (Chana), David Christian Slice, James Alvin Slice, IV, John Michael Slice, Joseph Levi Slice, David Aaron Wells (Gabrielle), Nathan Asbury Wells (Lynda), Samuel Pendleton Wells, Katherine Lucille Duncan (David), Joel Garrett Bryant, Amanda Jane Bryant, Elizabeth Marie Bryant (Daniel Osborne), and Joseph Gabriel Bryant; sixteen great-grandchildren, several step-great-grandchildren; sister, Linda Campbell, of Williamsburg, VA; sister-in-law, Terri Jones, of Knoxville; brother-in-law, Steve Swafford, of Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews.
