James Hamilton Slusser, Jr., of Chesapeake, Virginia, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Born on April 17, 1954, James was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Jim (as he was known by most) was born in Lexington, Virginia and was preceded in death by his parents, Zula Varee Miller Slusser and James Hamilton Slusser, Sr.

He is survived by his sister, Mary Catherine Slusser, and his wife of 43 years, Evelyn Slusser, whose steadfast support was central to his life. James was a devoted father figure to Linda Tallinger (Chris Tallinger) and Christopher David. He was known as "Grandaddy" to Joseph Hudgins, Christina Stewart, Scott David, and Tommy David, and "Poppi" to his great-grandchildren: Zoe Hudgins, Liam Stewart, and Aria Stewart.

Jim held a bachelor's degree in science from William and Mary and a master's degree in science from Boston College. His career at Eastern Virginia Medical School spanned 35 years, where he served as Instructor in Pathology and Anatomy, Director of the Electron Microscopy Facility, and Course Director of Histotechnology. Additionally, he was the Director and Owner of Tidewater Technical Labs, LLC. Jim also worked as a Clinical Laboratory Technician in Renal Pathology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas.

His research has appeared in the Journal of Medical Entomology, the American Journal of Neuroradiology, and the Society for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. In 1992, he received NASA's Group Achievement Award for his contributions to the ARC Life Science experiments and equipment used on the Spacelab Life Sciences-1 mission.

An enthusiast of water activities, Jim enjoyed sailing and boating. He was an accomplished musician, proficient with the guitar and keyboard, and composed several songs that were patented. He also had a passion for photography and lamp making.

He served as Past Worshipful Master at Atlantic #2 Masonic Lodge, Norfolk, VA, and was a member and former Patron of Eastern Star Virginia Chapter 22, as well as a member of the Knights Templar Priory of the Monitor and The Merrimack.

A service will be held 1pm Friday, Sept. 26, 2025 at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6pm till 8pm, Thursday, Sept. 25, 2025. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com
