James DeWayne Smith, known affectionately as “JD,” “Red,” or “Smitty” by those who knew him best, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2025, in Waupun, Wisconsin, at the age of 78.

Born on December 30, 1946, in Hillsboro, Wisconsin, Jim grew up with a love for sports and the outdoors. He was a graduate of UW Oshkosh, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Education. An athlete in his youth, he played high school basketball and remained an avid sportsman for most of his life, enjoying hunting, fishing, golf, and trap shooting.

Jim also served his country with honor in the National Guard.

He will be remembered for his quick wit, his sharp sense of humor, and his ability to bring laughter to any room. Jim’s knack for storytelling and his witty one-liners and comebacks made him a beloved companion, friend, and family member.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Myron and June Smith, and his brothers, Sydney Smith and David Smith.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Winnie Smith (née Snelling); his children, Joshua (Beth) Smith and Lisa (Dominic) Famularo; his grandchildren, Dante, Conor, and Riley; his sister and brother-in-law, Cindy and Wayne TeBeest, and their family; and sisters-in-law Ellen Smith and Mary Smith, and Mary’s family.

In keeping with his wishes, no memorial service will be held. His family encourages those who knew Jim to honor his memory in their own way — perhaps with a quiet moment in nature, a shared story, or a well-timed joke.
