Charlene Kamphuis, age 77, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at Ripon Hospital with her family by her side.
Charlene was born on August 22, 1947, the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Loomans. She graduated from Brandon High School in 1965 and soon after married the love of her life, James “Jim” Kamphuis, on September 2, 1966, at Alto Reformed Church. Together, they built their life in Brandon, where they shared countless joyful moments.
For several years, Charlene worked alongside Jim on the family farm before transitioning into various jobs. She ultimately discovered her true calling in a nursing home setting, where she dedicated herself to helping families with insurance and financial assistance. It was a role she cherished until her retirement in 2017. After retiring, Charlene devoted herself to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved watching and never missed cheering for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren performing in ball games, concerts, and any event they were part of. She was an active member of Bethel Reformed Church in Brandon where she served the Lord in several ways.
Music was a lifelong passion for Charlene. She was a gifted musician, serving as an organist for many years, singing in the church choir, and performing with the Gospel Tones Quartet. Her music brought warmth and joy to all who heard her play.
Charlene was also known for her love of family gatherings and hospitality. An avid cook and baker, she delighted in preparing Sunday afternoon meals and hosting Saturday breakfasts for anyone who wished to join. These gatherings became treasured traditions. She was also an active gardener whose flowers were admired by many.
Charlene is survived by her husband, Jim; her children: Randy (Carla) Kamphuis, Shelly (Dave) Freiberg, Tricia (Steve) Weisnicht, Torrie (Brian) Grade, and Craig (Heidi) Kamphuis; 17 grandchildren: Andrew (Alicia), Nicholas, Eric, Meghan, Andrew Wix, Kaelyn (Jimmy) Huebschman, Mitchell (Amanda) Freiberg, Kenna (Dawson) Drews, Taylor (Cassie) Weisnicht, Collin (Emma) Weisnicht, Keegan, Maci (fiancé Hunter), Jaeden, Alivia, James, Aubrey, and Adelynn; 7 great-grandchildren: Aiden, Kinsley, Rhett, Cason, Charlotte, Baker, and Reese; her sister, Beverly (Bob) Kastein; sisters-in-law: Marilyn, Darlene, and Joannie Kamphuis; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Marge Zacharias, Cathrine Billie, and Bernice Kok; her in-laws Garret and Minnie Kamphuis; and brothers-in-law Glen and Jerome Kamphuis, along with other beloved family members and close friends.
Charlene’s spirit will continue to live on in the lives she touched and the love she fostered.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Bethel Reformed Church in Brandon with Rev. Kevin Van Wyk officiating. Burial will follow at Alto Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Friday, August 22, 2025, from 4–7 p.m. at Werner-Harmsen Funeral Home in Waupun, and again on Saturday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
