James Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wallace & Wallace Inc Funeral Chapels & Crematory - Ansted on Feb. 12, 2026.
James William Smith of Ansted, lovingly known as "Rufus" to most of his family, passed away on February 10, 2026 at the age of 78.

Born on July 18, 1947, in Hico, West Virginia, James lived a life defined by hard work, devotion to family, and faithful service to his country.

A proud United Stated Marine, James honorably served in Vietnam and was a recipient of the Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifice. After his military service, he worked many years as a mechanic and truck driver, providing tirelessly for his family. He was a stubborn man in the way that spoke of strength and determination - once he set his mind to something, it was done. That same determiniation was matched by his deep love for thise he held dear.

James was a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his children: Sherri Zackoski and her husband Zack; Tammi Hackworth and her husband Matthew; and Travis Smith. He was a proud grandfather to Kaitlin Weaver, Cody Zackoski, Hunter Hackworth, and Brendan Zackoski, and a cherished great-grandfather to Nora Weaver, Tobias Weaver, Natalee Hackworth, and Archer Hackworth.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Rosey Smith, and his parents, John and Naomi Smith.

James will be remembered for his strong will, his work ethic, and his unwavering commitment to his family. His legacy lives on in the generations he helped shape and the values he instilled in them.

Semper Fi, Marine. Your duty is done; your watch is over. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. You willnever be forgotten.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2026 at Legg Cemetery on Stringtown Road in Hico at Noon with Pastor Mathew Hackworth officiating.
