James A. Sweikata, born on Nov. 1, 1940, passed away peacefully at home on Feb. 3, 2024.
He was born, raised, and lived in Montgomery his entire life. After graduating from Montgomery High School in 1958, he raced at the Montgomery Dragstrip for a few years and then entered the U.S. Navy for four years. Afterwards he started his 30 year career as a UPS driver where he met his future wife, Johanna, while delivering a package in Newburgh.
While their family grew to five he enjoyed playing softball for Freehills, Hillside, and Empire House. Then as the family continued to grow again through marriage and grandkids he began racing again in his front engine dragster for over 25 years. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels and drove for the cancer society to bring patients to their appointments. He was a member of the American Legion in Montgomery and the Vietnam Veterans of America.
He was predeceased by his parents, Dorothy and Adam, as well as his siblings Gail, Arthur, and Theresa.
He is survived by his wife, Johanna of 57 years and his sister Mary and brother-in-law John. As well as his children James Edward and Samantha, Adam and Daniella, JoAnn and Chris; his grandchildren Adam James, Christopher, Caroline, Jennifer, Jake, and Lexie, as well as many cousins, nephews, and nieces.
Visitation will take place Wednesday, February 7, 2024, 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Overhiser Funeral Home, 78 Union St., Montgomery, NY 12549.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, February 8, 2024, at 11am at Holy Name of Mary Church, 89 Union St., Montgomery, NY 12549.

Sending thoughts and prayers to Johanna and all of Jim´s family....
I attended his Mass this morning and wanted to say how beautiful it was to see his loving family there and grand daughter sharing those great stories!
I grew up in Montgomery ...was a few years younger than Jim...can´t remember not knowing him...it was a small village back then....
When I got married in 1967 I moved to Goshen ..lived there for about 40 years then moved back to Montgomery....it was not an easy transition ....but seeing Jim (as an usher) when I walked into Sunday Mass made me feel like I was really back home again....it was really great !
We had run into each other a few times earlier in Goshen...my brother and I were bringing our dad for radiation treatments and he was transporting other patients there..always offering to bring dad if we weren´t able to do it...
....he was always so nice and friendly...just a real regular guy...so good to be around ....I will miss him....and will be praying for him and all of you
Sincerely
Ceal (Schmidt) VanZandt
