James Thomas Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fern Creek Funeral Home - Louisville on Dec. 26, 2025.
The most remarkable man James Buell Thomas, Jr. went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, with his family by his side. He was also known as JT, Mr. Thomas, and Coach Thomas.

JT never liked being the center of attention and per his request no services are planned. A celebration of this great man will be held at a later date. We will share details as soon as they are confirmed.

James was born in Louisville, KY on December 10, 1954. James grew up riding horses and playing sports. He attended Fern Creek High School where he loved sports and he held the fastest wrestling pin in Jefferson County Public School, in Louisville, Kentucky for several years. He got a full scholarship to Dickinson State University in Dickinson, North Dakota for football and wrestling. He even made the varsity football traveling team when he was only a freshman.

James became a middle school teacher and a coach in football, wrestling, track and field. He taught for about 50 years in different schools throughout North Dakota, but the majority of his time was in West Fargo. In the last several years, he taught computer classes along with computer robotics. He retired in 2020.

He is preceded death by his father, James Buell Thomas; his mother, Ilene Thomas; and brother, Eddie Lee Thomas.

He is survived by his wife of over 20 years, Shannon; their sons, Preston (Winter) Brekhus and Parker Brekhus; grandchildren, Ronan and Kaden Brekhus; sister, Betty Jane Thomas; and so many devoted family and friends. He is also survived by his animals, Teddy, Freddy, Thunder, Frankie and Hank who were by his side 24/7.

James will be remembered for his love of sports and how dedicated he was to his family. He was a man of his word and one of the good ones. Family came first for JT. He was the best dad and grandpa one could ever ask for. He was greatly loved by all who met him and he will be deeply missed.
