James P. Thorson (1964-2025)
James P. Thorson of Geneva, Illinois, passed away October 16, 2025, in Geneva. Born January 7, 1964, in Hinsdale, Illinois, he was the child of Robert and Camilla Thorson.
Jimmy loved his girls, Linnea and Liz, and his big family. He was the youngest of seven - ahead of him were Alice, Anne, Philip, John, Mary, and Michael.
Jimmy was funny, smart and mischievous, with an easy smile, take-charge attitude, and genuine care for others. He was passionate about politics and was an excellent cook, enjoyed camping and gardening, and for a time he kept his family on edge by riding a motorcycle. As keeper of our deceased parents' effects, he informally functioned as the family historian.
Jimmy was great pals with his brothers Philip and Michael, who said, "Though his life ended far too soon, Jim left behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, and integrity. He was a gregarious and generous soul who loved good food, good company, and a good laugh. A gifted chef, he was known for his mastery of the grill and smoker - producing legendary steaks and barbecue for family and friends. He enjoyed cars, country music, casual gambling, and the loyal companionship of his beloved mastiff, Burr. Jim will be remembered for his warmth and humor-and for the countless ways he made others feel welcome, valued, and at home."
Jimmy graduated from Hinsdale Central High School in 1982. During high school he started as a busboy at Country House restaurant in Clarendon Hills. Through hard work and natural leadership, he moved up the ranks to cook, bartender, kitchen manager, assistant manager, and general manager of the restaurant's new Geneva location.
The Country House crew was Jimmy's second family, watching over him in his final days, along with his beloved friend and neighbor, Mary Anne Boyer.
Jimmy is survived by his cherished daughter, Liz Thorson of Naperville, Illinois; brothers and sisters Alice, Anne and Mary Thorson of Kansas City, Missouri; Philip Thorson (Wendy) of Evansville, Indiana, Michael Thorson (Jenn) of Highland Beach, Florida; and niece, Emily Thorson of Maryville, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Camilla, daughter Linnea and brother John.
The family will say goodbye to Jimmy at a private memorial. At his request, friends may honor him with donations to the Les Turner ALS Foundation (lesturnerals.org).
