James Tuten Obituary

Following a brief illness, James Larry Tuten passed peacefully at home in Panama City, Florida, on Sunday, October 12, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was 85.
Born on December 19, 1939, in Madison County, Florida, Jim was the son of James (Jim) Stafford Tuten and Annie Blanche (Leslie) Tuten. Because his father was also named James, he was called Larry by his family and friends in his hometown. As he grew older, he became known as Jim to most others-but he always answered to both.
After graduating from Madison County High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he proudly served his country. Following his active-duty service, he earned a degree from Florida Bible College in Miami, Florida.
Early in his career, Jim worked as a schoolteacher at Florida Christian in Miami and Aucilla Christian in Aucilla, Florida where he met the love of his life, Sandi. He later transitioned to a 23-year career with Xerox. In total, he served 20 years in the military-four years active duty and 16 years in the reserves. He will be laid to rest with military honors in recognition of his faithful service.
A man of deep faith, Jim was a devoted member of his local church, where he served for many years as a deacon, sang in the choir, and often performed duets with his beloved wife, Sandi. He also faithfully taught Sunday School and worked in the children's ministry. His steady presence and quiet strength left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Jim loved to watch things grow, spending many joyful hours tending to his vegetable garden and outdoor plants. His sense of humor and gift for story telling or delivering the perfect joke endeared him to many. He was a patient, gentle, and kind man who deeply loved his family and his Saviour.
Jim is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sandra "Sandi" Mashburn Tuten; his son Clay Tuten and wife Raina; and grandchildren Connor, Hunter, and Alina. He is also survived by his sisters Glenda Cobb, Lou Drawdy, and Peggy Whiddon, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bruce Tuten, and his daughter Emily.
A funeral service will be held at Grace Baptist Church in Panama City, Florida, on Friday, October 17, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. The service will be facilitated by Heritage Funeral Home, followed by burial at The Mashburn Cemetery in Bennett, Florida.
Jim's family welcomes flowers from those who feel led to send them. However, in honor of his lifelong love and reverence for Scripture, they kindly invite memorial donations to support Bible printing and distribution through Bibles International biblesint.org/give or Bearing Precious Seed bpsmilford.org/memorial.
