James N. Verdegan, 92, of Green Bay passed away on Monday, March 13, 2023 at his home surrounded by his family.
James was born on July 18, 1930 in Green Bay to John and Catherine (Gonion) Verdegan. He was a 1949 graduate of Central Catholic High School. James served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. On May 31, 1958, he married the former Karen Heitzkey in Green Bay. She preceded him in death on June 22, 2022. James was a machinist for Bay West Paper Company for 35 years.
James grew up on the family farm in Bay Settlement, he often spoke of fond memories of his years on the farm. You can take the boy out of the farm but you can't take the farm out of the boy. His time on the farm instilled his hard work ethic, his love for the outdoors, and definitely gave him a green thumb. He enjoyed gardening, hunting with his dogs, cheering on his favorite team, The Green Bay Packers, and cherished the time spent with his family, especially his great-grandchildren.
James is survived by his children and their spouses, Becky (Steve) Van Straten, Suamico: Mari Jo (Timothy) Gulbrand, Howard; grandchildren: Amy (Andy) Cote, Bryton (Angie) Gulbrand, all of Suamico; great-grandchildren: Ally, Cash, and Zoey Cote; brother: Ron (Rose) Verdegan; Altoona; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Susan DeNamur, Nashville, TN, Rosemary Heitzkey, Green Bay, Victor (Sandy) Heitzkey, Suamico, and Greg (Jan) Heitzkey, Green Bay. He is further survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews. James was preceded in death by his parents: John and Catherine Verdegan; wife: Karen Verdegan; son, Kevin J. Verdegan: brothers and sisters: John Verdegan, Jackie (Jack) Allen, Audrey (Babe) Nuss, and Charlie (Wanda) Verdegan; parents-in-law: Romuald and Jeane Heitzkey; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law: Judith Finnell, William Finnell, Lawrence DeNamur, Bruce Heitzkey; and nephew Robert DeNamur.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, 2270 S. Oneida St, Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at 3:00 PM with prayer service at 4:00 PM in the Chapel. Entombment will be in the Allouez Catholic Chapel Mausoleum at a later date.
James' family would like to extend a special thank you to his angels at Unity Hospice.
We will always carry your memory in our hearts, Rest in Peace Father.
