James "Carroll" Walters, a beloved member of Hartsville community, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was a talented mechanic and had the incredible ability fix anything with wheels under it. Carroll's passion for mechanics started at a young age.

Born on January 12, 1944, in Hartsville, SC, Carroll was the son of Edward and Catherine Byrd Walters.

Carroll's career as a mechanic was nothing short of remarkable. Known as one of the best in his field, he could tackle any mechanical challenge that crossed his path. Whether it was repairing cars or fine-tuning engines, Carroll's expertise was unmatched. His dedication and skill earned him respect from all who knew him.

Beyond his work as a mechanic, Carroll was known for his vibrant personality. He had an infectious sense of humor and loved sharing jokes and stories with those around him. Carroll enjoyed bringing joy to others through laughter and never missed an opportunity to put a smile on someone's face.

Outside of work, Carroll had several hobbies and interests that brought him happiness. He was an avid Dale Earnhardt fan and followed the Atlanta Braves baseball team passionately. Listening to Buster Freeman and Jimmy White broadcasting the Red Fox football game on the radio was one of his favorite pastimes. Additionally, Carroll dedicated close to 20 years of his life helping with the Lake Robinson Rescue Squad Haunted House—an activity that showcased both his love for community involvement and his talent for creating memorable experiences.

Carroll is survived by his two devoted sons: David Walters (Shawn) and Brent Walters (Ashley), both residing in Hartsville. He is also survived by his brother, Gerald Walters (Joyce), and his sisters, Bobbie Grant (Johnny) and Jewel Gibson. Carroll's extended family includes his brother-in-love, Cooney McDougald (Sheila), and sister-in-love, Regina Parker (Boo); son in law, Kenny Stratton (Pam)

Carroll had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren: Scott Walters, Lauren Langley (Cody), Ciara Stiers (Sam), Summer Walters Hunter Gainey and Cole Gainey. Their achievements and milestones brought immense joy to his life. Additionally, Carroll experienced the profound joy of being a great-grandfather to Hunter, Harper, Miranda, and Sophia.

Although Carroll was predeceased by several loved ones, including his daughter Missy Stratton, his parents brother Charles Walters, brother-in-love David McDougald, nephew Scott Walters (who was also his best friend), and sister-in-love Blanche McDougald, their memories remain cherished.

To honor and pay tribute to Carroll's remarkable life, visitation services will be held on February 14th from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Norton Funeral Home And Crematory - Hartsville located at 1414 West Carolina Avenue in Hartsville, SC. Following the visitation, a funeral service will take place at the same location at 3:00pm. The burial will then occur at Chapel Hill Baptist Church Cemetery located at 1569 Ruby Rd in Hartsville.

In honor and memory of Carroll the family has asked anyone with an "old" or "antique" model car please drive to the funeral and help lead the procession to the cemetery.

The family has requested that Memorial gifts be made to Norton Funeral Home to help them with funeral expenses.
