James Wegener Obituary

James H. Wegener
Born: May 14, 1929 in Volo, IL
Died: November 23, 2025 in Libertyville, IL
James H. Wegener, affectionately known to many as Jim, was a beacon of laughter and a pillar of strength in his community. Jim was born on May 14, 1929, in the humble town of Volo, Illinois to father Martin S. and mother Helen M. Jim's journey through life was marked by an unwavering commitment to service, family, and faith. His earthly chapter concluded peacefully on November 23, 2025, in Libertyville, Illinois; leaving behind a legacy of joy and generosity. Jim's life was a testament to the power of love and dedication. He shared a beautiful marriage with his beloved wife, Mary Ann Wegener, for an incredible 72 years (mom is a saint for sure). Together, they raised two sons, James F and Charlie (Janet), who in turn blessed them with grandchildren Jim (Suzie), Jon and Allison. Jim's heart swelled with pride for his great-grandchildren, Colten and Cash, who brought him joy. The family tree that Jim helped nurture stood strong with the support of his younger siblings, Warren (Marge) and Jake (Janice), and the fond memories of his late sisters Shirley (Bill) Karls and Joanie (Gordy) Miller. A product of a lifelong commitment to education (not really - he couldn't get out of school fast enough), Jim attended St. Mary's Catholic School in McHenry under the supervision of Monsignor Nix (they had countless one on one conversations), followed by McHenry High School, where he "squeaked by" and laid the groundwork for his future endeavors. His early years were spent in the construction industry before he ventured into entrepreneurship with McGee's Store for Men. Later, he returned to the trades at Stan's Lumber, demonstrating his ability to adapt and excel in various careers. Not one to rest on his laurels, Jim embraced a new challenge as a McHenry County Sheriff Bailiff, a role he held with distinction until his retirement at the age of 75. Jim's service to his country was marked by his time as a corporal in the US Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. He credited his strong faith for making it back home from Korea. His patriotism was further reflected in his roles as Past Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4600 and as a dedicated member of the Catholic Order of Foresters for over 75 years. His faith guided him as a Faithful Navigator of the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree. A man of faith, Jim was a devout Christian who lived by the principle that a life of service is a life well-lived. He served his community as a McHenry Township Trustee and McHenry Alderman for the Third Ward, and he was an active member of the McHenry Rotary Club. Jim's interests were deeply rooted in the simple pleasures of life. He cherished every moment spent with his family and his beautiful wife. Tending to his Hereford cattle was a close second, a pastime that allowed him to connect with the land and his Creator. He passed this passion on to his sons and grandchildren. Those who knew Jim would describe him as funny, handy, and selfless. He had a gift for bringing humor into the lives of others, lightening their burdens with a well-timed joke or a clever remark. He would frequently exclaim, "hold my beer and watch this". His hands were skilled in the art of fixing and creating, a trait that served him well both in his professional life and in the loving care of his family. Above all, Jim was selfless-a man who gave freely of himself to those in need, embodying the Christian virtue of charity. As we celebrate Jim's remarkable life, we remember a man who lived with purpose and passion, who found joy in service, and whose laughter was a balm to the soul. His legacy of love, laughter, and faith will continue to inspire to family and friends. P.S. The Smurf Crew (Dad and Uncle Bob Brennan) is now reunited in Heaven – good luck with that! In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital. A visitation will be held at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory located at 3700 W. Charles J. Miller Rd McHenry, IL 60050, on December 01, 2025, from 3:00 to 6:30 pm. Followed by the life Celebration Service at 6:30pm. I worked with Jim while he was a bailiff at the courthouse. Always helpful and always the consummate gentleman. He left quite the legacy of service and family. Deepest condolences to Mary and his family.

Aunt Mary and Wegener family, it made me cry when I read about Uncle Jim. I loved him and was always so proud of him and admired who he was as a person. I can´t imagine how sad you are as a
family to have lost your patriarch. The McHenry County community has lost a leader who showed everyone that love, respect and service to others is the way to live a good life, which he did. I´m sure he´s already in heaven laughing and joking around with the Brennan guys. R.I.P. Uncle Jim.
