James J. Wier 73 of Lewistown died early Friday, November 25, 2022 in the Central Montana Medical Center of natural causes. He was born April 10, 1949 in Billings, Montana the son of James A. and Ada M. (Masini) Wier. He received his education in Lewistown graduating from St. Leo's High School in 1967 where he excelled in athletics. He then attended the University of Montana in Missoula. On January 3, 1970 he was united in marriage to Linda Schell in Lewistown. He graduated from the U of M in 1971 with a BS in Business Administration. They returned to Lewistown and worked at St. Joseph's Hospital, now Central Montana Medical Center, as the Assistant Administrator from 1971 to 1973. He then worked at the First National Bank as a Vice President from 1973 to 1975. In 1975 he joined the family business partnering with his brother to purchase Wier Furniture from their parents. They operated two stores in Lewistown and operated one in Helena and Great Falls for a short time. After several years he brought in a new partner allowing his brother to move on. He retired from the business selling to his son in 2010.
Jim was very active in his community he was one of the founders of the Lewistown Youth Baseball/Softball Association, served on the Roundtable for St. Leo's School, was instrumental in reviving the Lewistown American Legion Baseball Program and making the change from the Lewistown Hawks to the Lewistown Redbirds, he served on the Lewistown School Board, the Central Montana Medical Center Board and the Central Montana Medical Center Advisory Board, the Elks Lodge and Eagles Lodge both of Lewistown and was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church.
Jim was an avid Grizzly fan, avid golfer, but most important was following his children and great grandchildren in all of their activities.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years Linda; son Jim (Kate) and daughter Deena (Jason) Birdwell all of Lewistown; brother William (Sarah) of Bozeman, MT; sisters Janet (Ron) Taylor of Cheyenne, WY and Kellie Wier of Fort Collins, CO; 4 grandchildren A.J. Wier of Billings, Sydney Wier; Ajiah and Aniya Ross; one great grandson Myles all of Lewistown and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Patrick and his grandparents.
Funeral Mass for James J. Wier will be Thursday, December 1, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. in St. Leo's Catholic church with committal to follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery. A Vigil Services will be Wednesday, November 30th, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. in the Cloyd Chapel. Reception will follow the committal at the Elks Club. The Cloyd Funeral Home is assisting the family.
In honor of Jim, please wear your favorite sports team apparel to the Vigil and Mass.
Friends are asked to make memorials to the Lewistown Redbirds, Central Montana Medical Center Cancer Center Foundation or the charity of their choice and they may be left at the Cloyd Funeral Home.
