James Owen Wilburn, age 86, of Hitchins, Kentucky, peacefully departed this life to be with his Lord on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at the UK King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland. Born on March 8, 1939, in Rush, Kentucky, he was the cherished son of the late George W. and Clotine Brainard Wilburn.
James was a devoted family man, and his legacy is carried on by his loving wife, Thelma "Bonnie" Glover Bush Wilburn, and his children: Sandra Ellington of Salt Lick, KY; Jeff (Karen) Wilburn; Bobby (Bonnie) Wilburn; Shannon (Steve) Rice; Stephanie (Reese) Riffe; Vicki (Ronnie) Pennington; Blaine (Tammy) Bush; and Chad (Melodie) Bush, all of Grayson. He was a proud grandfather to fourteen grandchildren-Shelby, Abby, Allie, Sid, Chris, Bradley, Sommer, Levi, Corey, Cameron, Cheyenne, Garrett, McKenzie, and Lynsey-and a loving great-grandfather to eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Charles (Deloras) Wilburn and Greg (Tammy) Wilburn; his sisters, Betty Sturgill and Joann (Bobby) Fannin; and a host of friends and extended family who will deeply miss him.
James was preceded in death by two brothers, John Paul Wilburn and Homer Wilburn; a daughter, Claudia Hope Bush Cotten; a grandson, Eric Lewis; and a brother-in-law, Ishmal Sturgill.
A proud graduate of Prichard High School, James honorably served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1959. His strong work ethic was evident throughout his life as he dedicated himself to various roles, including a lifelong farmer, sawmill operator, and sole proprietor of a general store. For over 20 years, he served his community as a magistrate, earning the respect and admiration of those he served. James took great joy in sharing the fruits of his labor, particularly his renowned tomatoes, which he sold at local farmers' markets.
James's life was a testament to hard work, dedication, and love for his family and community. He will be remembered for his unwavering spirit, kindness, and the countless lives he touched.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Monday, September 8, 2025, at the Malone Funeral Home in Grayson, with Bro. Ron Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North East, where he will be honored with military rites. Visitation will be from 6-9 PM on Sunday and after 9 AM on Monday until the time of the service.
