James was born on January 30, 1935, at Anadarko, Oklahoma to Chris and Odie Alexander Wright. Family later moved to Wichita Falls where he attended school. In 1952 he moved to Fort Worth, Texas where he was employed by A. Brandt Furniture Mfg. He worked there until he opened his own business, Wright's Custom Upholstery in Keller.
