Jane Stewart Pillar, born Feb. 11, 1941, was called home peacefully on Saturday, October 4, 2025. She will be always remembered for her beautiful smile, kindness, and generosity. Jane will be greatly missed by her husband of 61 years, John Pillar, her children Lauren (Jim) Trocano, Jim (Karen Walter), Susan and Karen Pillar, grandchildren Grace and Dan Trocano and Kelvin Pillar, siblings Susan (Barry) Ives, Mike (Victoria) Stewart, and Peggy (Roger) Greenwood, and nieces and nephews. Jane was preceded in death by her parents Jay and Dorothy Stewart and her grandson, Jeevan Pillar. Jane grew up in Homestead Park where she and John were neighbors. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Rosemont College in Philadelphia and earned a Master’s Degree from Duquesne University. Jane was a teacher for many years, including over 20 years at St Thomas More School (now Ave Maria Academy) in Bethel Park. A devoted advocate of Vatican II, Jane had an unwavering commitment to Catholic Social Teaching. Jane supported many organizations that promote the changes adopted by Vatican II. Inspired by St. Francis, she believed in the adage “preach the gospel and when necessary use words.” To this end Jane organized a Faith and Light community for disabled adults which met for many years in her home, tutored and conducted prayer services for women incarcerated in the Allegheny county jail, and helped John deliver meals on wheels. Jane believed in both actions and words. She wrote and submitted many letters to the editor on peace and justice issues which were published in the Post-Gazette. Jane and John loved to travel and toured many countries in Europe and Asia. Jane especially enjoyed their annual trip to Niagara on the Lake, Ontario, and river cruises on the Danube, Seine and St.Lawrence Rivers. Most of all Jane cherished family times with her children and grandchildren.
