Jane Kay Shoup, 84, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at Charlestown Place in New Albany. She was born August 17, 1939, in New Albany at Saint Edward's Hospital to the late William Dickman and Mary Pendry Dickman.
She grew up in New Albany in a close-knit family of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Graduating from New Albany High School in 1957, she earned her degree at Ball State Teachers College, got married, and began teaching in the New Albany area in 1961. The next few years Reid and Todd came along and in 1972 the family found itself in Apple Valley, Minnesota. Jane taught elementary music for several years, earned her Master's Degree in Counseling at Winona State College, and started a new career as a Substance Abuse Counselor at St. Mary's Hospital in Minneapolis.
In 1982 she reconnected with a high school friend, John P. "Jack" Shoup, and when they married,she welcomed Jack's adult daughters Angie and Marcia into her life. In 1984, Jane and Jack moved to the Palm Springs, California area where Jane had taken a job at the Betty Ford Center.Over the next years, the happy couple moved around the country so Jane could set up counseling programs in California, Oklahoma, Washington State, Missouri, and then back in New Albany.
Jane was a committed church goer her whole life as she combined her love and talent in music with her love of the Lord. Nearly everywhere she lived, she gave of her talents as either an accompanist or a music director. From her early days at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, DePauw Memorial Methodist Church, and the First Church of Christ, Scientist in New Albany, Christus Victor Lutheran in Minnesota, and Our Saviour Lutheran in Virginia, she gave of her musical skills whenever the opportunity arose.
She is survived by her dear cousins Jim Dickman of Louisville, and Shelley Dickman of New Albany, her sons Reid (Leslie) Bonshire of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Todd (Natalie) Bonshire of Warrenton, Virginia, stepdaughters Angela (John) Schroeder, New Albany and Marcia Shoup, New Albany, grandchildren Nathaniel and Olivia Bonshire, Dominik and Nikolai Bonshire, Erin Schroeder, Alex (Shelby) Schroeder, Steven (Katelyn) Tinius, and Morgan (Sean) Tormoehlen, 4 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband John P. (Jack) Shoup.
Funeral service will be held at DePauw Methodist United Church on Saturday, September 2, 2023 at 12:00 pm (noon) with visitation starting at 10:00 am and will be buried at Graceland Memorial Park. Arrangements have been entrusted to Naville and Seabrook Funeral Homes. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.nsfuneralhomes.com. The family request that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Brandon's House Counseling Center or the American Cancer Society.
