Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - Southern Indiana ChapelDonald Johnson, Sr. was born in New Albany, Indiana, on March 19, 1934, and passed away peacefully in the embrace of his devoted family on August 10, 2025. A beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, Donald's life was a testament to diligence and compassion.
For over 43 dedicated years, Donald carved out a remarkable career as a lineman at General Electric, contributing to the production of electronic devices that enhanced the lives of many. He took great pride in his work, embodying the values of hard work and reliability. His strong work ethic was matched only by the love he held for his family, which was undoubtedly his proudest accomplishment — watching them grow and thrive brought him immeasurable joy.
Donald was an esteemed graduate of New Albany High School, and his education laid the foundation for a life of commitment and service. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War, demonstrating his deep dedication to his country. This period of service further defined his character; he was a humble man with a servant's heart, always willing to lend a helping hand or offer a listening ear.
A loyal husband to his late wife, Mildred Johnson, Donald also grieved the loss of his beloved mother, Cora Bell Johnson, his father, Jonas Whitman Johnson, step-mother, Clara S. Johnson, and two brothers, Oscar and William Harold Johnson, as well as his sister, Virginia Johnson. Each loss left an indelible mark on his heart.
He will forever be remembered for his kindness, compassion, and unwavering loyalty to those he cherished. He was a devoted father to his sons, David Johnson and Donald Johnson, Jr. (Patricia), and to his brother, Ralph Johnson (Kathy). His wisdom and gentle spirit were a source of comfort for many, including numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family, who will carry forward his legacy of love.
In his leisure time, Donald found joy in a variety of pastimes. He enjoyed working on cars with his neighbor, cooking out, and spending quality time with his family. A steadfast Indiana fan, he adored watching sports, especially when cheering for the Colts. He also found contentment in the simple pleasures of life, such as watching his favorite TV shows and caring for his beloved dogs. His faith was a cornerstone of his existence, and he stood proudly as the oldest living member of his congregation, guiding many through his steadfast example.
The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to Pastor Michelle Washington for her unwavering support during this difficult time, along with Dr. Joshua, and Mrs. Mary Joshua, a dear family friend William Noris who assisted the family, his devoted niece Connie Durett, and the staff at Charlestown Place Nursing Facility, whose care brought comfort to Donald in his final days.
Donald Johnson, Sr. lived a life filled with love, faith, and unyielding dedication to his family and community. His spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. A visitation will be held on August 22, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home in New Albany, followed by a second visitation on August 23, 2025, from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM at Jones Memorial AME Zion Church, where a funeral service will commence at 11:00 AM.
