Jane Barker VanderZwaag, a loving and generous wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on May 31, 2025, in Chapel Hill, NC. Born on May 14, 1930, in Detroit, Michigan, Jane's life journey was marked by her indomitable spirit, kindness, and dedication to her loved ones and community.
Jane was the beloved wife of the late Harold J. VanderZwaag, with whom she shared a beautiful life and raised a family in Amherst, Massachusetts. She was a beacon of love for her children, John B. VanderZwaag (Emmy), Carol J. VanderZwaag (Lin Crockett), George H. VanderZwaag (Kathleen), and Charles S. VanderZwaag. Her 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren gave her great joy and happiness.
Jane was raised as an only child in Detroit, Michigan by the late George and Lillian Barker. Jane's education at the University of Michigan laid the foundation for a life of service as a speech therapist, working for many years in the public school system in Chicopee, Massachusetts. She touched the lives of many through her teaching and caring.
Beyond her professional achievements, Jane had an array of interests that brought her great joy and allowed her to connect with others. Her love for art led her to a docent role at the Springfield (MA) Museum of Art. Jane's passion for playing bridge opened up many opportunities to connect and build relationships with friends.
As we bid farewell to Jane, we take comfort in knowing that her story does not end with her passing but continues through the love she shared and the lives she touched. Her warmth, her laughter, and her strength have left an indelible mark on our hearts.
There will be a private burial service. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Springfield Museums, Development Department, 21 Edwards Street, Springfield, MA 01103.
