Janet's Life Story
Our dear, Mother Janet D. Devereaux sadly passed peacefully in the comfort of her home in East Orange, NJ on October 18, 2023, at the age of 74.
Janet Deveraux was born Janet Dolores Murrey, on January 17, 1949, in Newark, NJ. She was the middle child of three children, Thomas, and Randy, of the late Charles Freeman Murrey and Janie Thomas Murrey.
Janet began her educational journey in the Newark School system. Graduated from West Side High School in the spring of 1966. She then continued her higher education at Howard University, then eventually graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Rutgers University.
In 1973, Janet's beloved only son Robert Thomas Millard, III was born. Most interested in Robert's education by sending him to private schools from elementary to high school. It was most important to her to mold and instill in her son the lessons and pride of the family ancestry. In doing so, Robert has accomplished much for Janet to be proud of. She loved her son above all.
She began her career at PSE&G as a Human Resources Systems Analyst. After working in this role from 1978-1987, she embarked on a more fulfilling career starting as a Case Manager for Project Protect Battered Women's Shelter. This started her journey in Social Work from 1987-2005. She started as an Outreach Counselor for Covenant House, then took positions as a rape and incest counselor, which led her to working with Project Respect, and eventually to her most fulfilling role as a Project Coordinator for the Hyacinth Foundation. Where she was a HIV Pre and Post counselor, specializing in African American Youth with HIV/AIDS.
While MCing a friend's wedding in 1984, she met the love of her life, Kevin Devereaux. They loved to laugh, loved movies, and most of all loved each other. They married in September of 1998. They were married until the untimely passing of Kevin in 2013. Janet continued to keep Kevin's memory and love alive each day.
In 2021, Janet became a proud grandmother to Aminah Bobbi Millard. She was affectionately known as "Grandma J" and loved making Aminah laugh. She is a joy to her parents Robert and Munti.
Janet leaves to celebrate her life, her devoted son, Robert Thomas Millard, III and wife Munti Millard of Newark, NJ, her granddaughter, Aminah Bobbi Millard, eldest brother, Thomas Murrey of Oklahoma, her beloved nephew/second son Jamie Murrey and partner Jeannine Gerin, of Bellville, NJ, niece and nephew Michelle and John Murrey of Texas, lifelong friends Joyce Harris of Houston, Texas, and Renee Marshal of Lawrenceville, Georgia, and a host of cousins, family, and friends.
Janet was predeceased by her father, Charles Freeman Murrey, her mother Janie Thomas Murrey, her brother Randy Murrey, and her husband Keven Devereaux.
Janet was a woman who loved hard and love unconditionally. She made us all laugh with her unmatched comedic timing. She loved to watch Black and White movies, Westerns, Star Trek, and Star Wars. Janet left these beautiful, sincere words to be remembered by, "I always loved to laugh, and enjoyed making people laugh. I want to be remembered as a woman who was loved and gave love. I loved my son above all others."
