Janet Hazel Hieb, 100, Minot, formerly of Burlington, died Friday, June 6, 2025, in a Minot memory care center.
Janet was born March 11, 1925, the daughter of Will and Nellie (Dodge) Thieling in Kidder County, ND. She was raised and educated on the family farm near Tuttle, ND and graduated from Tuttle High School in 1943. She assisted her father on the farm and gave herself the title of "dad's hired hand." Following graduation, she taught at a country school for one year in Tuttle, ND.
Janet was united in marriage to Jacob Hieb on August 18, 1944 at Evangelical United Brethren Church in Tuttle, ND. They made their home on a farm near Tuttle until moving and residing in various places including Jamestown, ND, Marion, ND, Bantry, ND, Des Lacs, ND and finally, Burlington, ND in 1984, where Janet made her home for several years.
During her life, she was employed at Speedway Café for twelve and half years and then decided to join the school lunch program at Des Lacs School. She was also employed at the Minot Air Force Base cafeteria and the BX Warehouse.
Following their retirement, they moved to Mesa, AZ for a year while she worked at a retirement complex. Jacob died on October 14, 1983 and she returned to Burlington, ND.
Janet was a member of Faith United Methodist Church where she was involved in the Sunday school program as a teacher and the church choir. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women's Circle where she held various offices and the singing group: "Happiness Is." Later in life, she loved serving at the soup kitchen in Burlington for many years into her mid 90's.
Janet loved spending time with her grandchildren and visiting with friends whenever she could. She spent 26 winters in Arizona after Jacob's passing, alternating between Timothy's and Arnie's homes helping to care for her grandchildren when they were small. She was a voracious reader who enjoyed traveling, coloring, putting puzzles together, writing letters and playing her Omnichord and harmonica. She loved to sing and was very musical. She could play most of anything by ear.
Janet's loving family includes her children Arnold (Margaret) Hieb, Cave Creek, AZ, Richard (Luana) Hieb Minot, ND, Larry (Peggy) Hieb, Lake Audubon, ND, and Timothy (Vicki) Hieb, Hudson, WI, daughter-in-law Jill Hieb, Minot, ND, 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild and special friend Bob Bruhaug, Des Lacs, ND along with numerous nieces and nephews.
