Janet Kowalewski, age 85, passed away peacefully at home from natural causes on March 1, 2026. She was born on November 11, 1940, to the late Joan and Alexander Kowalewski.
Born with cerebral palsy, Janet never allowed physical challenges to limit her ambitions or spirit. Through determination and the support of her family and community, she pursued education and experiences that enriched her life and inspired others.
Janet was a devoted Catholic and member of St. Joseph Parish whose faith guided her throughout her life. She attended St. Joseph School in
Norwich, Connecticut, and later graduated from Norwich Free Academy. She continued her education at the University of Connecticut, where she earned a degree in Psychology with a minor in Mental Disabilities.
Janet dedicated part of her professional life to serving others, working at the Mansfield School and Training Center for the Disabled. Her work reflected her compassion and commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities.
Janet was an avid reader who found great joy in books and lifelong learning. She was also known as a loyal and devoted friend, maintaining meaningful relationships throughout her life and offering kindness, encouragement, and companionship to those who knew her.
She had a passion for travel and exploration. Over the course of her life she traveled to 14 countries and 22 states, embracing opportunities to learn about different cultures and people. Among her most cherished experiences were her travels with the Diocese of Norwich, including a memorable pilgrimage where she had the honor of meeting Pope John Paul II, the beloved Polish pope, and attending his inauguration.
Janet was predeceased by her parents, Joan and Alexander Kowalewski, and her brother, Alexander Kowalewski.
For the past 13 years, Janet was a client of Circle of Health, where she received care and support under the supervision of Cynthia Jean-Mary. During this time she formed meaningful relationships with those who helped support her daily life and independence.
Janet will be remembered for her resilience, her faith, and her adventurous spirit. She showed those around her that a life of purpose and joy is possible regardless of obstacles.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, March 16, 2026, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Woyasz & Son Funeral Home, Norwich. A Funeral Mass will follow 11:00 am. at St. Joseph Church on Cliff Street in Norwich. Burial will immediately follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Janet's memory to the Rose City Senior Center,
Norwich, Connecticut.
Janet's life was a testament to courage, faith, friendship, and the power of living fully. Her determination, kindness, and deep faith will continue to inspire all who knew her. The Hail Mary, one of her favorite prayers, brought her comfort throughout her life and reflects the faith that sustained her.
May the angels lead her into paradise, and may perpetual light shine upon her.
