Janet Rieth (Proffer, Widner) Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 30, 2024.
Janet Kathleen Rieth (Proffer, Widner), aged 82, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2024, in Brighton, Michigan. Born on October 21, 1942, Janet was a beacon of knowledge and warmth, having dedicated her life to teaching at Rankin Elementary within the Carman-Ainsworth School District.

Janet was a charismatic individual who cherished the opportunity to teach and guide young minds. Her educational journey began at Rankin Elementary, progressed through Mandeville High School, and culminated with higher education receiving her Master's Degree from the University of Michigan, equipping her with the skills and knowledge to pursue her passion for teaching.

Beyond her professional life, Janet was an avid lover of antiques, often exploring flea markets and garage sales. Her green thumb was evident in her beautiful garden, and her adventurous spirit was marked by travels to all 50 states and numerous cruises.

Surviving Janet are her daughter, Tammy (Mike) O'Boyle; grandchildren Devin Widner, Donovan Aho, Tia Aho, Jordan Barkey, Nicholas Blair, Antoine McKeown, and Ashley (Antonio) Kerr; and great-grandchildren Evyn, Trever, Tommy, Kathleen, Wyatt, Avalon, Emmet, Antonio, Ashanti, and Amarion. She also leaves behind her brothers Lester (Alta) Proffer, Ron (Carol) Proffer, Roger (Linda) Proffer, John (Charlotte) Proffer, Bob (Joyce) Proffer, Jim Proffer, and Jeff (Kay) Proffer; and sister Donna (Jack) Ogle. Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Elizabeth Proffer; husbands Kenneth Rieth and Tommy Widner; son Tommy Widner; daughter Lesli Widner; brother Jack Proffer; and sisters Dorleen Wharry and Diane Ebert.

A celebration of Janet's life and a tree planting ceremony are being planned for the spring of 2025. In lieu of flowers, contributions to her great grandchildren's education funds can be arranged through her daughter, Tammy. Donations are also welcomed at The Salvation Army, an organization dear to Janet's heart.

Dear Tammy and family,
I am very sorry to hear of your Mom´s passing. I have so many great memories of working with her at Rankin Elementary. She was a wonderful teacher and always kind and caring toward the students she worked with. I also knew her as a great Mom who loved her kids and always tried to do her best for them. Hugs and sincere sympathy to all who knew and loved her. May the angels welcome her to heaven and may your best memoriebgive you comfort during this difficult time.
