Janet Viets Obituary

Janet Teresa Viets
April 23, 1933 ~ March 2, 2025
Janet Teresa Viets, 91, a devoted disciple of GOD. Loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, best friend, rock of strength to all, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 2, 2025, immersed in all the love of her family and friends.
Janet is predeceased by her husband Edwin W Viets, her parents George K. Hawkins, Edna F (Sabine) Hawkins and many cousins and aunts and uncles. She is survived by her son Keith Viets, (Brenda), daughter Heather Masse (Scott), her grandchildren Scott and Jordyn Masse, and daughter Melanie. She was also neighborhood mom to Dan Raynor, David Raynor, Eileen Meehan, and Nanny to Sean, Ryan, and Jack Meehan.
Janet was born in Bridgeport, CT, lived in Clinton, Guilford, and New Smyrna Beach, Florida, where she graduated High School. Janet attended nursing school and graduated as an LPN. As a nurse she was called to the very first Connecticut Hospice where she lovingly cared for the terminally ill and the families who loved them. She retired after 25 years of service.
Janet's North Branford home of 60 years in Deerfield Hills grew lifelong friendships which will always be cherished and remembered. Janet believed deeply in GOD's teaching and dedicated her life to walking in his word and living by example. She was one of 9 founding members of the United Methodist Church, Branford, Connecticut. She believed strongly that raising her children in the love of God, would teach them that a little faith could go a long way. She believed that by loving God and your neighbor the world would be just might be a little kinder. The foundation of her life was "Do under others as you would have others do unto you". Spreading love, kindness, and support was not just what she did, but rather who she was. Janet was often referred to her as having "Saint Like qualities". Janet did private duty nursing and continued to care for other well into her mid 80's.
Janet walked with God for 91 years and we take comfort in knowing God called her home. May her memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved her, and a prayerful reminder for those who did not.
Visitation will be held at Keenan Funeral Home in North Branford, Thursday, March 6th from 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., with an 11:30 a.m. funeral home service. Burial will follow at East Lawn Cemetery in East Haven.

My family lived next to Ed & Janet, and I spent a lot of time with her as a pre-teen. She became a second mom to me. She always had a heart of gold and offered me advice in her kind and gentile way.
My condolences to Keith, Heather and Melanie and their families. She will be missed by so many.
