Janice Poppema Dykshoorn, was born to parents, John and Rae (Hoogeterp) Poppema on May 18, 1936, in Hospers, Iowa. She had two sisters and three brothers. She spent her childhood at Christian Grade School and graduated from the Hospers High School.

She met Don Dykshoorn at Hettie’s Café through the matchmaking efforts of Rich Wallinga, John Vande Berg and Hettie Woelber. Don sat at the counter and Jan always had her coffee in a booth. After conspiring with John and Rich, one day Jan was having her coffee, forcing them to get to know each other. The rest was history. They married on September4, 1957.

Jan worked as a bookkeeper at the Starrett Department Store and was in fact next door drinking coffee with Don when the famous Sheldon fire took place. There was some concern because the store employees were not sure where Jan was, but one fellow employee took Jan’s coat and purse from the store and saved them from the fire. The fire brought a positive note to Security State Bank because Jan came to work for the bank on August 1, 1958, and in 1974 was elected assistant cashier. Jan retired after thirty-eight years of service.

Jan and Don spent many years traveling in all sorts of ways – by car, van, motorcycle, ship and air. The culinary love remained and if you wanted to know about a restaurant in the area, Jan and Don knew where to go. Since 1953, they traveled by motorcycle and helped organize the local Maranatha Motorcycle Club. The motor home came along in 1987. There travels have included a lot of eating out and sightseeing. They have jaunted not only over the continental Us, but to Germany, England, Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, and Jamaica.

Jan was a very involved member of First Reformed Church in Sheldon. She was a RCYF sponsor, girls league leader, taught catechism, sang in the choir, and was involved in evening circle. She was also a member of Business and Professional Women’s Club.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 67 years, Don; two sisters, Kathleen Mulder of Longmont, Colorado and Leora Van Meeteren of Grand Rapids, Michigan; also, other relatives and friends.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents, John and Rae Poppema; brothers, Marvin (Kay), LeRoy, and Ronald (Geneva) Poppema and brothers-in-law, Walt Van Meeteren and Paul Mulder.
