Obituary
On Thursday, April 13, 2023, Jason Michael Steen Sr. lovingly known as J-Bird, transitioned from this life to the next at the age of 52.
Jason was born August 10, 1970, at Saint Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana to Samuel and Josephine Steen (both preceding him in death). He graduated from North Central High School in 1988 and went on to attend Vincennes University. After a short stay at college, Jason held several jobs until he found the passion that truly fit him and in August of 1997, Jason was employed by Adidas, formally Reebok. During his tenure, he held several positions and was the 2nd Shift Operating Lead in the Shipping department at the end of his 25 ½ year career.
Jason united in marriage with Dominique Denise Emerson on September 3, 1994, in Indianapolis and created a warm and loving home for their three sons. It was there that Jason mastered his techniques of turkey frying and go carting with the boys which they loved immensely!
Jason enjoyed hanging out with his childhood friends and will be remembered for his love of having a good time and those secret, joy rides in his mother's green Oldsmobile. When his father's health started failing, Jason took on the weekly responsibility of taking lottery tickets to Danville, Illinois on Saturday mornings. This was something he was very proud of and happy to do for his father.
Jason will be remembered for his passion for working on cars. Before COVID struck, He was in the process of restoring a classic Delta 88. He also held a strong belief in maintaining the pristine appearance of his cars. His father would often comment, "Jason you're gonna rub the paint off that car!". As a teen and young adult, he loved showcasing his cars and motorcycles driving up and down 38th street and then parking up at the packed car wash or Picadilly's. One of his favorite yearly traditions was taking the trip with his best friends to the Little 500.
Jason had a passion for barbecuing too. No matter what time of day or late, late night you could always catch him throwing something on the grill. He was a master at it. Grooming was important to him also. He NEVER went without a haircut! Just days before his passing, his loving brother had given him a fresh cut. Jason enjoyed life the best he could but sadly his illness just took over.
Jason is survived by his devoted partner of 12 years, Linda Marie Johnson; sons, Jason Michael Steen Jr., Taylor Evan Steen, and Trent Lyle Steen; daughter, LeAni Steen; grandsons, Jaelen Michael Steen, James Darryl Steen, Jace Eli Steen, and Hayden Eli Steen; sister, Karen Elaine Steen-McNairy (Malcolm McNairy); brother, Samuel Steen Jr. (Melinda Steen); nephews, Quinton Jevon Steen, Dylan Allen Tate Steen (Ericka Steen), Malik Samuel Steen, and Uriel Kyndell Steen (Shannel Steen); nieces, Samantha Elizabeth Ann Steen, Shannon Elise Steen, Georgia Ann Fletcher, Cheyenne Laura Steen, Vanessa Michelle Steen, and Tamara Lynn Steen; and a host of great-nephews and nieces, cousins, co-workers, friends and a circle of wonderful best friends who will miss him dearly.
Rest In Peace, Jason the struggle is over, and you are surrounded by the light!

We became best of friend at a young age. We shared a bunch of common interest. We could talk everyday or once a month, but it was always like we just talked a few hours ago. Rest well my guy. No more pain, no more clocking in at the gig, worrying about the ride. I pray we see each other again one day so I can give my guy some dap! Love you player!
