CARLTON, Jay E. – of Trenton, Florida, formerly of Whittemore, Michigan, age 71, passed away at his daughter's home in Vassar, Michigan, on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, surrounded by family after a battle with cancer. Honoring his wishes, cremation will be taking place. A Celebration of Jay's Life will be held at 1PM on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at the O'Guinn Family Funeral Home in Clio. Celebrant John Montney officiating. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Saturday from 10AM until the time of service at 1PM.
Jay was born on January 5, 1954, in Mt. Clemens, Michigan, to the late Merrill and Norma (Brewster) Carlton. A proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he served his country honorably. Jay's lifelong work ethic was a testament to his character - a skilled woodworker, general contractor, and true jack-of-all-trades, he always gave his best to every project. For more than 30 years, Jay called Gilchrist County, Florida, home, where he became an integral part of the community, generously offering his time, talents, and support to anyone who needed it. He frequently shared his love of No-bake cookies with people all over town. Jay's younger years were filled with the thrill of motocross racing. His interests later expanded to collecting arrowheads and artifacts, drawn to the history and stories each piece held. A true car enthusiast, Jay's love for hot rods and classic cars were more than just a hobby, it was a way of life. He took immense pride in restoring and maintaining his beloved cars – especially his 1965 Mustang and the 1932 Roadster he diligently rebuilt. Whether it was attending car cruises, participating in car shows, or simply enjoying a scenic drive, Jay never missed an opportunity to indulge in his love for automobiles. Just two days before his passing, he was granted his final wish of attending the Frankenmuth Auto Fest 2025, showcasing his unshakable passion for cars until the very end.
Surviving are: Daughters: Shannon Conner, and Samantha (Kyle) O'Hearn; Grandchildren: Stephen Conner, Joshua Conner, MaeLeah Conner, BrookeLynn Conner, Graysen Carlton, and Owen Goodman; Great Granddaughter, Harper Conner; Brother, Jerry Carlton. Many other loving family members and dear friends. Jay was also preceded in death by his brother, John Carlton.
